Talk about snide humour and satisfying romance! Janeane Garofolo is at her wittiest as Marcy, a political aide from Boston, who flies to Ireland to search for her senator's roots in a last ditch political gimmick, ending up stuck in a small Irish village at the height of a matchmaking festival.
Janeane spars beautifully with David O'Hara (Stephen from Braveheart), who is funny, dead-pan, and really kinda yummy in his role as Sean, a disillusioned journalist-turned-bartender. The two leads both irritate and fascinate each other as they dodge matchmaking attempts during their fruitless search for a mythical family called the McGlorys.
Wonderful performances by Milo O'Shea and Dennis Leary. It's a pity that this film is not available on UK DVD. Really a remarkable romance with no mush!

Despite the region 2 indicator, this dvd now has a UK and Irish release.

Ten years on, this gem of a movie still pulls at my heart strings. Garofelo, Leary and O'Hara all shine in this wonderful little tale centred around the Ballinagra "Matchmaking" festival.

Marcy (Janeane Garofelo) is sent by her Boston senator boss (Jay O.Sanders) and aide (Denis Leary) to the Emerald Isle to try and find his Irish roots in a push to secure votes. Seemingly unfazed and hacked off at the trip (although she gives a wry smile at a painting of JFK at Shannon Airport!) she motors around Ballinagra trying to do her job, whilst the local matchmaker Dermot (Milo O'Shea) is trying to set her up with Sean (David O'Hara), a world-weary journalist happier serving in a bar and taking the rise out of his brother.

O'Shea, in particular, is wonderful as Dermot - when Irish eyes are smiling, you know they're up to something.....

The film is utterly predictable - but that's part of its charm. It was filmed mainly around Connemara in County Galway and the scenery is truly breathtaking.

This movie won't change your life - but it will innocently take you away from rough and ready modern life - if only for a few hours.

Highly recommended.

I have watched this film time and time again and I never fail to find it as funny as I did the first time I watched it. If you are Irish you can totally get the humour in this film. I found it hilarious and would strongly recommend it.

This has finally come to dvd, I had it previously saved on my HDD of the tv... It's very much a Sunday afternoon viewing. It's a Romantic Comedy ,but ,and most importantly in this day and age, It's a romantic comedy that does exactly what it says on the tin, It is both Romantic in that there is definite chemistry between the two leads, and Comedic in that it is funny, very funny. I really love this movie, I can't reccomend it highly enough, Go on, Buy it, you know you want to.... :D

I bought this DVD as a present for my sister. She loves this film but has found it impossible to find. I was delighted to find it on Amazon and it was delivered very promptly after I ordered it. The film is about a matchmaking festival in Ireland and it is good craic. If you like this film you would also enjoy Waking Ned.

Definitely a movie for the girls! and especially if you appreciate the 'craic'. Some good laughs but the story is predictable. A'nice' movie.

This film makes a mockery of an american senator trying to claim he has irish routes to win votes. It however turns into a lovely story of the old ireland and the peoples sense of humour in making him look ridiculous in between his assistant takes a wonderful tour of rural life and falls in love.

I stumbled across this film by accident, it was a straight to TV movie which I don't think was aired in Cinema's, but what a waste. It has you laughing & crying all the way through. Everyone who stays with us has to watch the film and we haven't had a bad review yet!

This is one of the best Irish/American comedies out there. It is laugh out loud stuff. An sceptical amercian is sent to Ireland to find the irish roots of an amercian senator coming up to an election and is landed in the middle of a match making festival. Brilliant!!
