This review is from: Buxtehude: Seven Trio Sonatas, Op. 2 (Audio CD)
I am delighted that Naxos have reissued this series. All three volumes are excellent, and Buxtehude's chamber music deserves to be far better known. His organ music is recognised to be of the highest quality (the young Bach famously walked 250 miles to hear Buxtehude play his own music) and while perhaps not quite in that league the chamber music here is extremely good and thoroughly enjoyable. It is full of melody and harmonic invention, is zestful and joyful in places and very beautiful in others.

The musicians are excellent. An ensemble which includes John Holloway, Jaap ter Linden and Lars Ulrich Mortensen ought to be something special and they never disappoint. The obvious delight they take in the music and in playing it together, coupled with an effortless virtuosity means that every movement shines and the discs are a joy from start to finish. The recorded sound (originally from the early 1990s) is very good indeed and the notes perfectly adequate.

This is fine music, beautifully played and I warmly recommend all three disc in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happiness on a CD, 12 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Buxtehude: Seven Trio Sonatas, Op. 2 (Audio CD)
I agree wholeheartedly with SN. I was not familiar with Buxtehude's music before, and these trio sonatas, Op 2 in particular, are absolutely gorgeous. From the opening allegro you are captivated by the charm and sheer joy of the music. It's life-affirming stuff and at the price no one should be without any of the three volumes. A special mention for the beautiful playing of John Holloway.
