5.0 out of 5 stars Back For Good, 14 April 2004

Two words - ABSOLUTELY BLOODY FANTASTIC! OK, three words, but you get the idea! Any thoughts that these blokes are past it must surely be laid to rest with this latest offering from the fantastic Norfolk Coast album. A dark, brooding number full of menace, complete with the tell-tale Stranglers trademarks. Dave's eloquent keyboards set the the tone after the first opening bars, and when coupled with Paul's deep vocals, they let you know that you're in for a mysterious, dark ride...BUT WAIT! What is that I hear, a beautiful refrain just before the anthemic chorus, that will have you humming to yourself long after first listen? Yes, it is. A wonderfully crafted song, & a marvellous antidote to most of the regurgitated crap that litters a sorry excuse for a chart nowadays. Yes, I sound like an old fuddy-duddy, & I am! However, this is music - pure & simple. Driven by vocals and with a wondeful harmony of keyboards and guitar - not forgetting the atmospheric guitar solo, all members of the band have created a slice of history - they're back, and aren't going anywhere soon! It's not pop, it's not rock - it will not be pigeon holed! Listen to it, enjoy it, & revel in it!

5.0 out of 5 stars GET BUYING, 15 April 2004

Not the strongest track off the album NORFOLK COAST, but this is only because the album is the best THE STRANGLERS have released in a long long time, if you dont have it buy it. Anyway back to the single , plenty here to please stranglers diehards and others who have a fleeting interest in the band, LONG BLACK VEIL, is certainly worth adding to your collection ,also a good track on the cd, LIFES TOO SHORT , with JJ BURNELL returning to vocal , again something which stranglers fans will enjoy.

Recently I saw The Stranglers perform live, headlining a festival. Prior to that festival I hadn't heard any of the new material, and only recognised the pre-Norfolk Coast songs. When I bought this single and listened to it, however, I remembered the tracks from when they were played at that festival, a testament to the memorability of the melodies. I remembered Waltzinblack instantly - that was the introduction music that was played as they came onstage, and what a wonderful piece of creepy circus-like music it is! Long Black Veil also struck a chord - I remembered hearing THAT from the live show, too. If you are a Stranglers fan who already has Norfolk Coast this CD is definitely worth owning for the soft, previously unreleased Life's Too Short, and the Stranglers' live intro track Waltzinblack. Long Black Veil, is, of course, a brilliant slice of melodic Goth pop. Definitely a good single.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great songs, 6 May 2004

Not only do we get Long Black Veil, a highlight of the recent Norfolk Coast album, where the Stranglers come as close to a great guiter/keyboard driven melodic popsong as they did in many years, also we get Life's Too Short. This is a non-album track written and sung by JJ Burnel. Great changes, great melodies and stunning backing vocals by Baz and Paul. Indeed a gem and well worth buying the single for even if you have the Norfolk Coast album already.
