4.0 out of 5 stars Times have Changed
I disagree with "a mighty roar to a squeak", and agree in part.
Yes, as a celebration for fans this offers nothing new - I certainly do not need to buy it as I have everything on it I want. It is however a brilliant line up for new comers to the 4AD stable; too often old 4AD fans dismiss the new signings: The Mountain Goats, Blonde Redhead and the unfeatured Cass...

1.0 out of 5 stars a mighty roar to a squeak
what a depressing listing... 4ad, seminal label and essential lifestyle accessory to millions reduced to this poor show.
this label defined cutting edge music, introduced so many excellent bands and we have this shoddy compilation as a 25 year nod.
why not release those tracks that are still lost in non-cd land, e.g. 16 days by this mortal coil... or give some...

why not release those tracks that are still lost in non-cd land, e.g. 16 days by this mortal coil... or give some serious thought to why people loved 4ad in the first place... we LOVED the music, the artwork, the otherworldliness... so get thumbing through the back catalogue, reignite the passion and stop reissuing the same albums over and over and over and give your fans something worthwhile.
lonely is an eyesore, even lonelier a label treading water.

It is however a brilliant line up for new comers to the 4AD stable; too often old 4AD fans dismiss the new signings: The Mountain Goats, Blonde Redhead and the unfeatured Cass McComb being amongst their brightest stars. Packaging wise it is hideous - but again, if aimed at newcomers it is a suitably trendy bit of work.
It would be great if 4AD had produced a compliation as monumental as 'Lonely is an Eyesore' - but lightning will never strike twice. Perhaps a nice dvd with 'Song to the Siren' and that much mentioned Red House Painters '24' video would be just what us old fogies from back in the day need.
Happy Birthday 4AD, I still love you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Epic Fail, 20 Feb 2010

Poor listing
Poor choice of tracks
This is an epic failure on the part of the present heirarchy at 4AD.

Track listing should have been the epic songs, not the leftovers;
Birthday Party - Mr Clarinet, Happy Birthday
Cocteau Twins - Pearly Dewdrops, Aikea Guinea, Mussette & Drums, Sugar Hiccup
Dead Can Dance - Mesmerism, Avatar
This Mortal Coil - 16 Days, Gathering Dust
Modern English - Smiles & Laughter, I Melt With You
Xmal Deutschland - Incubus Succubus, Qual, Mondlicht
Wolfgang Press - Mama Told Me, Sucker, Respect, Sweatbox
Lisa Gerrard, Brendan Perry, Michael Brook, Swallow, Xymox.... the list goes on

No offence to the newer bands but they just don't rate with the classic bands of the early-mid 1980s

I bought everything on 4AD between 1982 and 1999. Since then there has been very little to excite. With the obvious exceptions of Camera Obscura and The Big Pink

Don't waste your money on this extremely poor output from a once near-perfect label. Its all been downhill since Ivo left!
