4.0 out of 5 stars radio broadcast
Bearing in mind that this is a 1938 original radio broadcast, the poor sound quality adds to the authenticity of the piece. In order to fully appreciate how this broadcast caused a nationwide panic, it helps if you can imagine that the year is 1938 and you are listening to the radio in a time when the radio was the main source of home entertainment. 3.0 out of 5 stars No Indexing!
I don't know whether anyone has ever tried to clean up the sound of this broadcast, and I haven't heard the Pickwick release of this disc (easily findable on Amazon) but here the sound is acceptable at best. However, the worst aspect of this CD release is no indexing. It's just one long 57 minute 34 second track. It's definately worth a listen, but unless you do it in one...

It has to be said that the overall broadcast is amazing, the news reports, interviews, and eyewitness accounts are so well created that it is hard to believe that they are completely ficticious. It really is no wonder it caused such a panic, particularly for listeners who tuned in mid-way through the broadcast.

This is wonderful. My family are fans of the story and Jeff Waynes musical version so we were interested in hearing the orginal broadcast. Best listened to in a quite room without distractions to get full effects. Wonderful orginal quality, you can imagine what it must have been like to hear this and understand the panic it caused.
As long as you remember that this is the orginal then you won't be disapointed, also works as a listening book!

The production standards compared to those of today stand up pretty well - definitely worth a listen for HG fans.

I love this version of The War of the Worlds not because of the controversy it caused when it was broadcasted in 1938 but the way it was dramatized by Orson Welles. I have no dislikes and I recommend it any sci-fi fan.
