4.0 out of 5 stars What Tarantino SHOULD and probably WANTS TO be
Ok, first this is solely a review of Straight to Hell, as I still have to watch the second helping of Cox that is Death & the Compass.

The inclusion in this film of a conga line of bandits and assorted miscreants dancing to a song about hot dogs should be enough to give a reasonable impression of what to expect. General film making statutes and expectations...

1.0 out of 5 stars only if you really have nothing else to watch
with all respect for the casting, boasting Grace Jones, Dennis Hopper, Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello etcetra, and perhaps the good intentions of the director, this one makes no sense. You can call it creativity, maddness, oddity or else, but THERE muste BE a minimm of sense in a movie. Watch it only if you are sick in bed and cannot move to replace the DVD in your player.

General film making statutes and expectations are hysterically blown assunder, more so than the likes of Tarantino, and others who still work within Hollywood confines despite their protestations of 'originality' would dare. OK the general absurdity of this maelstrom of unravelling chaos may border from a homage to Spaghetti westerns into a parody of them, but let us remember the film title. This IS a plummet right into Hell, as only Alex Cox could maybe envisage: a 'Lord of the Flies' grown up where all the misfits and outcasts or society converge and live in their own 'Mad Max' style world - amidst some gorgeously barren and ruined scenery. Strangers are viewed as threats, then welcomed, then distrusted again, often resulting in being randomly shot. Yet striving through it all is a ridiculous humour highlighting that films, like life itself, contains the improbable, impossible and the insane.

What else would you expect from a film starring The Pogues?

Movies tend to get stuck in a formula; "they are just products, a recipe that works once and then you do it again and again." (Sylvain Chomet)
Alex Cox's films are quite original. It takes courage to be different, to stick to a vision and to not always make sense. The temptation to fall back on convention and cliche is strong.
The roll-call of musicians (and film-makers) that were attracted to Mr Cox's vision is testament to the vitality and fun of his film-making. Can you imagine Joe Strummer, Grace Jones, Courteney Love, Elvis Costello, Jim Jarmusch, Dennis Hopper and Shane MacGowan being attracted to work with Leonard Nimmoy who's 3 Men and a Baby was the top grossing film of 1987?
Actually, that sounds like it would have been a good project...
