The Best British Rock Band In Years,
By
This review is from: Very Fast Very Dangerous (Audio CD)
If your looking for non-pretentious, non-theatrical straight up no nonsense hard, loud (but accessible) alt rock then look no further!!Its along time since i've heard a band and thought 'this is it!!, flawless!!' but this one really is, trust me! Monster crunching riffs, thumping bass hooks & gutsy strong vocals with just the right amount of screaming/shouting, so as not to be too inaccesible, all held together with the perfect blend of melody and 'noise'. Every song has something to offer, even the odd ballad with a strings section seems to work beautifully. Personal fave's include 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em', Blamethrower and the epic Return Of The Jedi. Reuben are a talented bunch of decent British lads and we all need to get behind them, buy their records and spread the word!! This is what the music industry really needs at the moment and I just hope they get all the credit and recognition they deserve!! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!!!!!

A masterpiece of an album from British rock's brightest hope.,

Released a little over a year after their debut album, "Racecar is Racecar Backwards" (a collection of songs written over the course of their years of touring the toilet circuit), Reuben come into their own with this outstanding album.Racecar was just a taste of what was to come. I didn't think it was possible, but Reuben have got even better. The album is more or less the story of the band's minor fame from the eyes of singer/guitarist Jamie Lenman. He frequently makes remarks and quips about the realities of the music industry, animosity from his former peers, and the fact that he still doesn't drive. I've always been a fan of albums that paint a sincere picture of where somebody is at that point in time, and this album does a fantastic job. Perhaps the crowning achievement is the epic masterpiece "Return of the Jedi," a song about how difficult it is pushing a "real" band into an industry full of image-obsessed tryhards and record producers that just want to shift units. The songs on this album are certainly more commercial than those on Racecar, but what they lose in technicality, they gain in maturity. Jamie's unorthodox guitar work and Jon's bass grooves do a good job at keeping these songs intelligent and not just commercial mainstream alt rock. Let's not forget Guy's drumming, which although somewhat toned down in this album compared to the last, is still showcased with a few fantastic fills and some incredible beats here and there. Tracks like "Nobody Loves You" demonstrate Jamie's ability to sing softly and sincerely just as well as he screams his larynx out on the heavy tracks. If you want to hear some loud, balls out, gimmick-less rock with an IQ, then this album is for you. Standout tracks are: "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em", "Nobody Loves You", "Lights Out" and "Return of the Jedi".

Very Fast...And Very Dangerous!,

Since falling in love with Reuben's style a few months after their debut 'Racecar Is Racecar Backwards', I got back from holiday to find that this album was to be released the very next week. I pre-ordered on Amazon, and it arrived 2 days before the release. The second it arrived, i slammed it into my CD player, to find that the boys have managed something very few bands can do, and have released a brilliant second album. What makes this work is the beautiful and unique vocals of Jamie Lenman, the harmonies, and the most wonderful riffs. They have taken a step forward from their previous album, becoming more riff-based, and less experimental with their approach. This band deserve to be big, they will be big, and with songs like the epic 'Return Of The Jedi', and 'Every Time A Teenager Listens To Drum And Bass, A Rockstar Dies', why shouldn't they be?

Underrated,

I came across Reuben by complete chance, I was casually browsing and arrived at Racecar is Racecar Backwards. I decided to gamble, and it paid off, the debut was excellent. Very Fast Very Dangerous in my opinion is somewhat more raw, and angst-filled than the debut. Of course, almost every band tries to involve politics and society within their lyrics but there are currently two approaches possible; the cheesy Green Day way, or the subtle Million Dead technique which works so well. Fortunately the latter approach is taken. Return of the Jedi in particular demonstrates this, as Jamie Lenman talks about the state of the music industry. It isn't sensationalist, and it doesn't look to get everyone talking about it. Instead, it attempts to flip the coin over and discuss how it is affecting music as a business. All of the songs are thought-provoking, and I am thoroughly pleased that they chose to stick with a relatively small label, so it allows the band to control how they produce the music and maintain their non-conformist attitude to their style, in a similar vain to that of Biffy Clyro. It isn't an easy listen, but it is thoroughly enjoyable.

There was a slight air of aprehension when i first whacked the black disc of VFVD in my stereo, having rocked out to their previous effort (racecar...) i was sure reuben would follow the same route as many others before them and release an over produced, watered down, 'music for the kids' type second albumn, however, i was (thank christ) proved wrong. There second full length effort is a mix of the melodic (thanks to the unique vocals of guitarist jamie lenman (& guests)) with a hardcore element. It sees the three amigos have made a pretty tight record with many a bone grinding riff layed down atop technical drums and driving bass lines. This release sees reuben hit top form with anthemic tracks (of the freddy kreuger caliber) such as 'a kick in the mouth' 'good night', touching on emo with the likes of 'best enemies' and 'nobody loves you', and throwing post hardcore into the mix with 'alpha signal three' and 'return of the jedi'. Overall this is a well written and well produced (chris sheldon) release which proves that the slow decay of skate culture and rise of the ungodley pop icons (abusing your ears such as McFly and the crazy frog)in recent times has not been all that bad, taking the limelight away from the british rock scene allowing it to spawn one of the best british rock bands in a long while. This albumn shows reuben are no longer fit for the kid's table and can go and rock it with the big boys, and will undoubtedly see many a fan (old and new)digging deep into their torn up baggies to front for the goods. Im done....GO BUY IT!!!!!!!!

The Best Album Ever?! YES!!!,
By
This review is from: Very Fast Very Dangerous (Audio CD)
Not even joking, actually the best album I ever heard! You buy an album expecting there to be 3, 4 maybe 5 really good songs on it and the1 rest are alright. But this album is actually INCREDBILE! Not one single track that isn't amazing. Return of the Jedi is genius, in my opinion the best song ever written by any band, ever. BUY THIS CD! For yourself and for the good of Reuben. Why they're not more popular I do not know. How they haven't been in the UKs top 10 yet I do not know this either. This band are truelly amazing! BUY IT!

Same old reuben, with an extra zing!!!,
This review is from: Very Fast Very Dangerous (Audio CD)
My girlfriend and i had been waiting the whole year for this album to be released, and we sure weren't disapointed with what the boys produced! This second album from reuben offers a similar sound to their debut, but with a little extra twist added. The melodic vocals, thrashy guitar, and powerful drum beats create a mind blowing combination for the listener. Great tracks such as blamethrower, Some mothers do 'ave 'em and A kick in the mouth really show that these guys have a lot to offer. My favourite track on the whole album Every time a teenager listens to drum and bass, a rockstar dies has the best intro to a song that i have ever heard. I recomend this album to any rock fan, especially those looking for something a little different from the usual. Well done guys on producing such a wicked album!!!

If you liked Reuben's first album don't hesitate to buy this one. It is just as good. Some of the songs on this are perhaps a little heavier than on the first album but there is a good mixture of rock tunes on "Very Fast Very Dangerous". From the catchy "Kick in the Mouth" and "Keep it to Yourself", to the heavy hitting "blamethrower" and the beautiful "Nobody Loves You". This is definately an album which gets you tapping your feet and nodding your head and I would recommend it to anyone who likes British rock bands such as Hell is for Heroes, Hundred Reasons, Million Dead, etc.

I got into reuben when racecar is racecar backwards (another album you must buy) came out about a year ago. It is my favourite album so i rushed to get this one when it came out, wondering slightly whether the standard would be maintained, and whilst it is different, i have not been disappointed! Its sooo good. Perhaps a bit more grungy than before and a little less progressive, with some much heavier songs, but also some beautiful ones, along with simple but awsome rocky nirvanaesque tracks. Stand out songs for me are Some mothers do have em, nobody loves you, everytime a teenageer..., alpha signal three, actually all of them! BUY IT NOW YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO

This review is from: Very Fast Very Dangerous (Audio CD)
Reuben have to be one of the best british bands you'll ever hear. Seriously. Every song they've produced has been fantastic. Every album is spectacular. Honestly, it's a shame not a lot of people have heard about them. Which is why I highly recommend you pick up any of their albums. Speaking personally, every song I hear gets stuck in my head after a while. And soon enough, the same will happen to you! Worth the money! BUY NOW!!!
