Aside from 'Stay Fly'... (2 1/2 stars)
on 30 April 2011
I know that this review is a little late but I wanted to bring balance to the questionable reviews written so far. I have followed Three Six since the late 90's and have seen alot of changes to the line up and style of their music.
This was supposed to be their apex and indeed has sold the most out of all of their albums as well as winning them various awards. With this in mind, one would think that there would be wisdom in the masses, how could so many be wrong? As with many award-winning, big-selling albums this was mainly driven by ill-founded hype. The single(Stay Fly)was a grating, cheese-fest that didn't suit the usually menacing tones of the Juiceman etc. while the other single single, Side 2 Side, sounded like dull filler.
There were some glimmers of hope that reminded older fans of their glory days such as Hard Hittaz, Half on a Sack and the Pirates of the Carribean-sampled Body Parts 3. Although these tracks are good for reminiscing to, they lack the punch of the older stuff.
Do not assume that I am merely looking back with rose tinted glasses, Three Six have never released a perfect album and filler has dogged all of their albums. It's just that there were more moments of brilliance and they had an energy unrivalled by any others in HipHop.
This album is more of a trip down memory lane than an album that will actually create any new memories.
