This review is from: Falla : El Retablo De Maese Pedro & Orchestral Works - Apex (Audio CD)
There are fiery selections here that burn their way into your sensibility. The vocalists and Dutoit's rip-roaring ensemble ardently believe in these pieces and everyone is inspired to give 100+++% to make you believe, in the El retablo piece, that you're sitting around a campfire with a bunch of desperados or mountain bandits celebrating risks and don't-count-the-cost passions. I was reminded of the spirit of Hemingway's FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS that took place in the mountains of this very country. The harpsichord concerto is urgent, clangy and, while mindful of classical forms, is scornful of cosying up to any that invoke pink tea and a doily. The Suite populaire Espagnole is more reflective, employing very few instruments and an instance of superb vocalisation to achieve its less ambitious ends. Here's a CD that's tops in every department, from conception to execution, offering gems we may otherwise be unaware of.
