4.0 out of 5 stars Exorcising Hosts
The film version of the successful, if niche TV series possesses a clever concept, summed-up in the title of my review. Whilst knowledge of the original TV series is certainly a sine qua non, the film itself is not just the burying of the TV series within a cinematic scope. Rather, it is an additional film with a film within a film - one of the guys on the accompanying...

3.0 out of 5 stars The League of Gentlemen?... Extraordinary
If you've read other plot lines for ''Apocalypse'' you'll probably understand the basic outline of the movie. (With the Royston Vasey inhabitants realising that they are only 2-dimensional fictional characters, they come to look for creators - Jeremy Dyson, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith - and try to persuade them to continue the TV series, fearing they...

3.0 out of 5 stars Another British TV Classic Dissapoints on Film, 9 Jan 2008
By

This review is from: The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse [DVD] (DVD)
I have been a fan of the League since their Radio 4 show. Unfortunately, since then it been a process of diminishing returns. Series 1- a classic; series 2 - excellent, though the "special stuff" plot strand is a damp squib; series 3- a curate's egg and wildly uneven. However you slice it, that isn't bad for 3 years on TV (2000-2002). Worringly, the christmas special shown between series 2 and 3 is arguably their best work. This movie is all they have produced apart for a live DVD since their last series in 2002.

A clever idea, as many reviewers have said, but it is a product of cold ingenuity that I think will alienate many of their fans. I don't find the "plight" of "pigeonholed" rich, acclaimed actor/writers funny or, crucially, sympathetic. Perhaps I'm the typical fan of a cult tv show that loses rapport with a series when it gains a wider audience.

Don't get me wrong - great acting, the odd laugh - yes. Just not an essential purchase.

How disappointing. I found the film utterly confusing and was glad when it came to an end. There wasn't enough from The Local Shop anyway!

Clever script that keeps the plot moving along really nicely. Wonderfull charcters given a makeover and placed in the real world highlighting how absurd they are. In short the film doesnt get boring because it moves from Royston Vaasey to the real world and then a fantasy victorian setting. The victorian setting is the best i remember first watching it and thought it was absoloutely hilarious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 9 Aug 2010

The story to the league of gentlemens apocalypse is appaulingly bad. The characters travel to the real world to seek out there creators and stop them from ending the series. What the hell were the league thinking. Somehow though this film ended up being one of my favourite films of the year as the writing and comedy is so beautifully constructed it leaves the film being amazingly good. The league who set out to make a cinematic piece have come out making one of the best pieces of work they have created so far. Some of the photography in this film is amazing. I refer mostly to the last battle in royston vasey a.k.a the apocalypse bit.

Don't be fooled by the naff story this film is comedy gold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 8 Oct 2005

If you loved the three series and Christmas special of The League of Gentlemen, like me, then you'll love this. It's a great, funny and weird film. Sure, the main three characters aren't the most popular or funniest, and I'm still wondering why Hiliary Briss returned to Royston Vasey of all places if he was last saw in the Carribbean!
Anyhoo, this is a fantastic film, with plenty of laughs for the LoG fan.

The extras are quite good too, I liked most of them, but felt the out-takes weren't as funny as I expected, like they are in most films. The deleted-scenes though were funnier than I expected as well!

An excellent buy for fans of the TV Series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Great British Comedy, 11 Sep 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse [DVD] (DVD)
When I first saw the trailers for this film, I was at first a bit scepticle however i am a huge fan of the league of gentlemen anyway so i still saw it and i must say, It had me in tears with laughter. Although the plot is slightly complex, it still is brilliant and a right laugh. It follows 3 main characters (Geoff Tipps, Hillary Briss and Herr Lipp) although it has many other characters like the superb tubbs, edward and of course, wife collecting papa lazarou. This film really is that brilliant!! If you haven't seen the TV shows however, i would reccomend that you see the show first. It has got to be the funniest british comedy for ages!

4.0 out of 5 stars LOG Apocalypse, 9 Dec 2005
This review is from: The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse [DVD] (DVD)
This movie has very little in common with the original tv series in the fact that there are more horror/sci-fi aspects ever than all out comedy, and certainly included are couple of scenes that you may well jump to where you'd least expect! As usual for the gents, theyve decided to banish any current rules and rewrite the whole idea of Royston Vasey, so instead of having the town and its bizarre characters set in the real world for everyone to put up with, we now have the town set in another dimension where they must travel to earth to save their own, by kidnapping the actual writers of the show (Steve Pemberton et al, although Jeremy Dyson is played by a different actor!), as they no longer wish to write any new series...!?... odd, very original in the sense that I cant actually recall a similar show ever trying it before.. and very LOG. Some people believed that the writers in real life had truly run out of ideas, and arguably this is true as this IS that very idea! Whatever the case, regardless of the fact that this may not be as funny as the tv series, this is still an entertaining film, so keep an open mind and just dont expect to see 'more of the same'! The traditional laughter track (that many people actually liked -no really!-) is still missing, but this is no great loss as it may not have been suited to the cinema format. Overall, this movie plays more like the strangest episode of the outer limits you're ever likely to see than a usual League episode anyway. Recommended.. now go and see the live show while you still can :)

5.0 out of 5 stars How can a League of Gentlemen fan hate this movie?, 1 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse [DVD] (DVD)
I'm a bit shocked with all the LoG fans who wrote bad reviews about "Apocalypse". Are you sure you really liked their comedy in the first place? Or you just laughed at the make-up and the catchphrases? Are you sure you really got it? This may sound arrogant, but after watching this amazing film, who dares to push their universe even further, I just can't understand the disappointment of all these self-proclaimed LoG fans. This is a risky, creative, funny and deep film, a TV series movie spin-off which actually understands that you can't just rely on old routines, tricks and puns to make it work (I think we all remember the "Ali G" movie debacle...). "Apocalypse" has a perfect pace, a mad yet carefully constructed narrative with a bit of Charlie Kaufman inspiration thrown in, the usual cinematic visual flair and some poignant moments. The LoG was never just about catchphrases and weird make-up (although some people seem to think it was, which is sad). They had to make a movie like this. It's a daring masterpiece about comedy and creation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!, 10 Nov 2005
This review is from: The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse [DVD] (DVD)
Plot: The only way to save Royston Vasey from an apocolypse is for the characters to come out into the 'real world' to find the actors and get them to write more material.

I'm a huge fan of the TV series, and was not dissapointed with this. I laughed from start to finish!!!

It is actually very well acted, with sometimes 3 of the same person in a scene (ie Tubs, Pauline and the actor that plays them), with the great gags you'd expect from the The League Of Gentlemen.
How anyone can give this such a low rating is beyond me!!
Rent or buy, and enjoy!!!
