This review is from: Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (Audio CD)
These two towering performances of Pictures at an Exhibiton, played by Byron Janis and Dorati/Minneapolis SO, have one thing in common. Both the original piano and the orchestrated versions are wonderfully vivid and alive in terms of music making.

Janis is not only technically brilliant but also an excellent communicator. He has the rare ability to penetrate to the heart of the music and to communicate it to listeners in the most intimate and imaginative way. How eloquently he captures the poetry, the humour and the poignancy of each episode!

Dorati's account matches Janis' in painting vibrant pictures with rich orchestral colours and huge dynamic range.

Recorded in 1961/62 & 1959(Orchestra Version) / Stereo
