4.0 out of 5 stars An album of two halves, 22 Sept. 2006
This review is from: Fabulous Disaster (Audio CD)
This album starts off in grandiose style, but just can't sustain its own high quality.

The Opener - Last Act of Defiance wreaks instant havoc, and then it's heads down for 2 of the all-time Exodus highlights Toxic Waltz and Fabulous Disaster. Undisputed Classics. Sadly from halfway (Like Father, Like Son) it rather loses its way.

It always seemed to me that Exodus were at their majestic best when singing about death and explosions, and that their attempts at political or social comment always disappear into their trousers. You can certainly grade the songs on this album along those lines.

Opinions are divided on Sousa's voice (a harder-edged Bon Scott), but the guitarrists (Hunolt left speaker, Holt right) riff telepathically and are a priviledge to hear. The production here is classic 80s Bay Area, and still sounds heavy today, so no worries there.

When it is good, this album is very, very good, but the several average tracks sound cruelly exposed next to the ones touched by genius.
