5.0 out of 5 stars Just like that..., 27 Feb 2006

Not a Tommy Cooper hat in sight - this 'Fez' is a collection of 21 songs selected from all three Trash Can Sinatra albums and recorded live at the Fez club in New York, December 2004.
If you thought, 'Safecracker' 'How Can I Apply?' and 'The Therapist' sounded great on 'A Happy Pocket'. Or, 'All The Dark Horses' and 'What Women Do To Men' were choice cuts on the newest album, 'Weightlifting' - then give your ears a bit of TCS-style T.L.C and luxuriate in this.
I usually detest 'Live' albums - (people will whoop at the oddest moments)- but I made an exception for the Trashies. I'm glad to say their latest offering disproves the rule that Live albums are usually pants.
The New York venue sounds warm and informal, the audience stunned into (mostly) silent respect. With between-song banter saved for the end of the CD, what you get are songs. And what songs they are.
With trademark Gentle harmonies floated over some quality Guitar work, the simplicity of melody comes to the fore.
There can be few songs on this Earth more beautiful than new track, 'Wild Mountainside' - which, Hoorah!- has been released as a single. Sweeter than shortbread, this love song to the Scottish landscape is as instantly affecting as Fairground Attraction's 'Ay Fond Kiss' or Brian Kennedy's rendition of 'Carrickfergus' - and must surely be a Celtic folk-anthem-in-waiting.
With Fez, not only do the criminally unsung Scottish five piece get to showcase their undoubted gift for melody, they also prove they can deliver the goods, live and acoustic.
The Trash Can Sinatras rightly deserve a place in the squad alongside Travis, Bell X-1, Teenage Fanclub and The Divine Comedy as purveyors of lush Celt-Pop delivered with a side order of whimsy.
According to 'Safecracker', "it takes a crook to know where to look" - Go on, leave a window open and let the Trashies steal you heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just 'Weightlifting'...., 8 Feb 2008

I first heard the Trashcan Sinatras Weightlifting on a demo CD, and liked it so much I bought Fez. Previous reviewers have said it all, Fez is a really fine collection of songs with each track just as good as the other. I don't usually like live performances on CD, this recording is straight from the mixing disk. The audience on the two nights of recording at New York City's Fez club were very well behaved. Nearing the end of Weightlifting, I'm sure I detect a little 'Ripples' from an early Genesis LP 'A Trick Of The Tail. Another of my all time favourites.
Forget the television, buy Fez together with a nice bottle of wine, settle down in an easy chair, put your headphones on and luxuriate. You won't be sorry.
