This was love on first play for me. I confess to being a long-time devotee of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, but even I have found some of his more recent recordings to be a little patchy. 3.0 out of 5 stars Come on Back
Loved One Endless Night and this cd took a bit of getting used to as the content and style is so different. Played it in car to & fro for abt a week and am now humming amongst others Saginaw Mitchigan
Not the best thing Jimmie has done but definately worthy listening to.

This was love on first play for me. I confess to being a long-time devotee of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, but even I have found some of his more recent recordings to be a little patchy. This, however, is one of those albums that makes songs you've never heard before sound familiar, and songs you know well sound like new. Perhaps the fact that this is a tribute to his Fender-playing father accounts for the feeling with which Jimmie's soaring voice embraces the lyrics (though he can do no wrong for me, as far as vocals go!). As a collection, the songs sit together beautifully - they include tracks recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Lefty Frizzell, and Hank Williams to name a few. My own ever-changing favourites include Saginaw, Michigan (you don't get rhymes like these anymore!) and Standin' on the Corner which I recognise from an earlier recording of Jimmie's. On the whole I'd say that what binds the songs is a common "attitude" often characterised by gentle humour and a respect for the simpler things in life. Not one song that will make me fumble for the Skip button though - thoroughly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly 5 star album, 17 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Come On Back (Audio CD)
Jimmie Dale Gilmore has recorded an album of country standards and breathed new life into every track. The backing musicians are on top form and everyone seems to be having a great time performing these terrific songs. The sleeve notes give an indication of why and the enthusiasm of all those involved is obvious.
