3.0 out of 5 stars How to Use this Machine with CD-Rs
There is a problem with this machine that it cannot properly read CD-R discs, however it is not insurmountable provided you slavishly follow these steps (which I have worked out by trial and error):

5.0 out of 5 stars Best budget HiFi, 24 Mar. 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips MCM11/25 - MP3/WMA Micro Hi-Fi System (Electronics)
After looking for a budget HiFi for about 3 months I finally decided on the mcm11 and couldn't be happier. Sound quality is excellent especially with the "Incredible" function switched on, bass is deep and rich, solidly built and it looks great. Try it with Gorillaz Daemon days or Jeff Buckleys grace and you'll think your listening to a top spec system. Excellent!

3.0 out of 5 stars How to Use this Machine with CD-Rs, 8 Jan. 2007

There is a problem with this machine that it cannot properly read CD-R discs, however it is not insurmountable provided you slavishly follow these steps (which I have worked out by trial and error):

1. Use 'Track-At-Once' NEVER 'Disc-AtOnce' (Track-At-Once can be selected using most burning programs eg NERO. The player cannot read discs created using 'Disc-At-Once')
2. Stick to 128kbits/sec bit rate (or less for WMA). Higher bit rates can cause stuttering at the beginning of the track.
3. Use WMA version 8. Later versions won't play. (NERO has a WMA version 8 encoder built in).
4. Discs burned with Pioneer drives won't play. I use an LG burner.
5. For faster reads, use UDF version 1.5 Disc Format (in Nero)

I have no trouble with this machine providing the CD-Rs are burned in the above way. It certainly beats throwing it in the bin!

2.0 out of 5 stars A great disappointment, 4 May 2006

This review is from: Philips MCM11/25 - MP3/WMA Micro Hi-Fi System (Electronics)
Obviously, these reviewers haven't tried playing CD-R's on this system yet. Put a prerecorded disc on and you'll be blown away by the fantastic sound quality of this small, relatively inexpensive hi-fi. However, try a CD-R/RW and it is all at sea. The problem is that the cd player cannot identify the points on the disc where new tracks begin. This makes programmed or random play, or even simply skipping to a particular track almost impossible. This is a glaringly obvious flaw in an otherwise flawless system.

To top it all, mine also developed a buzzing noise caused by the cooling fan a few weeks after purchase. What a shame the build does not match the design quality of this system. It is the best sounding system I have heard in this class, but the fact that I swapped it for a JVC UXS59 tells its own story.
