4.0 out of 5 stars 2 Hats, 4 Aug 2005
I am going to have to write this review fro 2 different perspectives. Firstly as a music lover of most genres and particularly dance then this is a smashing album. The are a huge number of classic tracks on the 3 cd's which bring a smile to your face when you think of the first time you heard them in a club. Tunes long since forgotten. It also neatly covers dance music as opposed to trance music or handbag or piano or any of the other many sub-catagories that electronic music has sadly been broken up into over the years so there is something for everyone on this. Yes if you're looking for a genre specific 'classics' album you'll be disappointed but if you like your dance as a whole you could be onto something.

The other perspective I want to wrtie from is as a DJ and yes from here it is a bit disappointing. Bland mixes, clearly computer blended as opposed to hand-crafted. Yes, if you want an example of a beautifully crafted mix or you want to demonstrate to someone what is meant by set building then get the original Renaissance Mix by Sasha & Digweed (the real one preferably, complete with the M-People tracks but the re-release will do) or Coldcut's 70 Minutes of Madness. But then I don't think this is the idea with this CD and the shear volume of good tracks make this a good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb -Takes you Back to the heady Days, 2 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Three CD's of superb tunes - some old favourites, a lot of classics and a few cheeky popuar tunes thrown in for good measure. This an album that doesn't try to take itself too seriously by claiming to be "the album of classics" -there are too many to get on one box set - but offers up everything it says on the tin -a collection of Renaissance Classics. A renaissance night is unique experience and this is classics according to the renaissance experience and i think its absolutely perfect. Just right. With tunes like Last Rhythm and Gat Decor - Passion, this is an album if you were a serious clubber, a halfway clubber or an occasional clubber. It fits for everyone. And for the person with the review that says its obviously computer mixed, do you seriously think that DJ's mix CD's for retails nowadays without using software? I don't think so.....

4.0 out of 5 stars good but beware, 28 Jul 2005

the songs are great but be warned that the track listing on Amazon is wrong. I bought the cd for some particular songs - most of which aren't on it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dance Til You Wear Your Slippers Out!, 25 Jul 2005
This is the perfect album for playing in the car or while you are getting ready for a night out. Some of the mixes are superb such as Brand New Heavies, Inner City and 808 State being among my favourites. I was surprised to see Ten City and Depeche Mode on the album but they really do blend in well with the other tracks. For me, there isn't a duff tune on here. I only got my copy at the weekend and have played it continually. Yep, this album is worth splashing your pocket money on. 10 out of 10.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best!, 5 Aug 2005
By A Customer
I bought this album from seeing an advert on the T.V. Most of the songs they played i knew and liked. I was expecting to hear more classic old style 90's songs and thought at last i had found a complimation i was looking for. It wasn't unusual for me to read a back of a cd cover and not know many on the list as alot of hits on this sort of thing are one-offs. But this time i really had no idea even when listening to all 3 cds. In the end it all sounded the same and became boring, perhaps good background music when socialising but thats all. There were no other songs/tunes i knew that were not on the advert so very disapointing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better, 10 Aug 2005
By A Customer
The selection of songs on the Renaissance album is very good. But there are some new mixes and songs i don't know. I prefer my 1997 Dance Tip - a decade of dance, which all the classics in their original mix. Still.... i would buy this album, if i did not have Dance Tip already.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less than I expected, but pleasing in the middle, 13 Sep 2005
With an album seemingly based firmly early-90's, not impressed. CD1 was pants. As was CD2, including tracks like M People - How can I love you more?. Hmmm

Until about half way through, where Gat Décor-Passion, Grace-Not over yet, Mory Kante-Yeke yeke, FSOL-Papua New Guinea, Moby-Go, The Age of Love-Age of Love and Robert Miles-Children all produce what can only be described as mixing excellence; a refreshing break from what was a very mediocre and stop-motion mixed collection, feeling more like one single following another, rather than one track being mixed into another.

The last disc was more enlightened, with the mixing style settling down to an easier to digest sliding.

Some nice tracks, but a good few which get annoying. My preference is to tunes such as FSOL-Papua New Guinea, so I was not too pleased with offerings like Robin S-Show Me Love.

1.0 out of 5 stars Neither Renaissance, nor Classic, 28 Jul 2005
Having been there from Renaissance's conception over ten years ago, new album releases from one of the world's greatest, slickest and most decadent club nights have been eagerly awaited and, with a couple of blips along the way, notably the original three disc Renaissance Ibiza and Renaissance Anthems, each release has been utterly fantastic.

Not content with material mixed by renowned artists such as Sasha, Digweed or Fathers of Sound, Renaissance have a habit of bringing newer and sharper DJs to the fore, all different and, dare I say, perhaps more cutting edge, but undoubtably with the Renaissance sound.

So, Renaissance and some of the classic tracks from five to ten years ago; sounds like a winning combination?

Unfortunately, no.

I can't describe how disappointing this album was; words simply evade me. A ten year old with no concept of music, let alone mixing, could outgun this album; easily. It's incredible to hear just how such a comprehensive selection of excellent tracks can be made to sound dull, flat and utterly, painfully lifeless.

That's not to say you should go out, buy the album and find out. Instead, invest in the original Renaissance. Got it already? How about pretty much any of the other releases from this club? Indefinitely a better way to spend your hard earned cash since, even if you're an ardent fan, this album is an utter waste of money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could Have been so much more., 20 Jul 2005
This album seemed to have it all, but alas, it does not forfil. I would see if you could listen to a copy of it before you buy it as you may be disappointed. There are a couple of good tunes but they seemed to be hidden behind some truly rotten ones.
