2.0 out of 5 stars Battlestar galactica music season 1. Mccreary
Enjoyed watching the series on DVD which gave the viewer frequent hints and short excerpts of the orchestral music supporting the action. It promised great things sounding complex and at times exotic with its unusual mix of instruments. However, none of the themes are developed further, each item is so short (about one minute, a few stretch to five minutes), that it...

It's not until you play this soundtrack that you realise how much of the Battlestar universe is intertwined with the excellent music of Bear McCreary. Having worked with Richard Gibbs on the music for the mini series, Bear treats us to over 70 minutes of music from season 1 of the show.

This CD comprises the bulk of the music from the first season and covers the essential elements that make up the core of the show.

Using a variety of instruments from many countries, McCreary once again delivers an orchestral soundstage that you'd only usually get in movies.

There are some subtle pointers in some tracks that are fleshed out into great examples of leit motif for certain characters and they are expanded upon on the season 2 soundtrack.

The music is moving (Passacaglia - my favourite), dramatic (Battle On The Asteroid), humourous (The Dinner Party) and haunting (Bloodshed).

There is also both versions of the opening theme, the US version and the UK version. The US version is a more military style and was used in the flashback sequences from Act Of Contrition but the UK version sounds much better and in feeling with the show giving a more dramatic impact to the listener.

All in all any fan of Battlestar Galactica, new or old, should own this soundtrack and for those out there who just like excellent music then it's a safe bet that you'll like this CD!

This soundtrack is amazing. The music is nothing like your bog standard sci-fi soundtrack with their big brass sections and triumphant themes. the composer Bear Mcreary uses percussion instruments exceptionally well. he also uses alot of ethnic instruments, irish instruments and haunting vocals to create a beautiful fusion of different cultures. it also prvides insight into the world with translations to some of the vocals. In short buy even if you're just a fan of good music.

Bear McCreary's score for season one of BG builds on the stellar work of Richard Gibbs in the pilot. He utilises the style and motifs of Gibbs (eastern modalities and instrumentation, driving percussion and soaring soprano all set to orchestra and synth), and goes further, opening out the range and introducing his own touches - celtic horns, martial drummimg and most strikingly McCreary's own nascent Glass-y minimalism.

Dark, haunting and compelling the is a real six star score and marks Bear McCreary out as one of the most gifted young composers working on film or TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars as good the miniseries music!, 17 Aug 2005
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica Season One (McCreary) (Audio CD)
It's an absolutely MUST for any BSG fan, and it's also a very pleasant surprise for those who love scores. Both UK and US opening themes are included (and that's really good), and 70 minutoes of great and ecclectic music.
THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME is great and there are lots of great themes of all the episodes.
Bear MacCreary goes far beydond the premise of the miniseries and he surprises us with all-new themes

Evocative and compelling Bear McCreary's musical score adds an extra character into each scene from season one. Taking sole control of the musical input can't have been easy given the existing music attached to the mini-series, part of which he wrote. That said from the starting point of the mini-series to the finale in season four this is a good example of a steady transition of the rhythms, styles and use of instruments the entire Galactica universe encompassed. Thoroughly enjoyable and memorable, well worth buying.
Plus if Michael Hogan ( Saul Tighe) says Edward James Olmos ( Admiral Adama) used Bear's music to inspire the cast and crew when he directed his episodes who am I to question his choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, 16 April 2010
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica Season One (McCreary) (Audio CD)
The reimagined Battlestar Galactica has one of the best soundtracks of any TV series ever. The Season One soundtrack isn't as good as later seasons but themes featured here are built on later. Stand out tracks for me are "A Good Lighter", "Two Boomers", "Wander My Friends" and the fantastic "Passacaglia" which is reinvented in "The Shape of Things to Come". Some of the other tracks worked well as part of the episodes but aren't so listenable without watching, they are quite percussion-heavy.
Overall, I'd say give this a try and if you like this you'll want to get the other seasons soundtracks too.

This CD does exactly what it says on the label, and it is a fabulous soundtrack to go with the first amazing series of Battlestar Galactica. In my opinion the soundtrack is one of the things that makes the show great, in that it is semi-classical in nature but not stuffy by any means at all. I have spent many hours listening to this in the car. Many tracks are fast and exciting, others are slower and more sombre.

If you enjoy the television series you will enjoy this CD.

Too many albums to choose from in one series. Liked the fact this had an American title track and an English one though. There is a difference; dive in to find out

2.0 out of 5 stars Battlestar galactica music season 1. Mccreary, 28 April 2013

Enjoyed watching the series on DVD which gave the viewer frequent hints and short excerpts of the orchestral music supporting the action. It promised great things sounding complex and at times exotic with its unusual mix of instruments. However, none of the themes are developed further, each item is so short (about one minute, a few stretch to five minutes), that it leaves one feeling short changed and disappointed and wanting more. A few of the musical themes are beautiful and quite haunting but are over in seconds. Give us more, Mccreary!
