5.0 out of 5 stars Classic wrestling
If, like me, you love the classic wrestling of the 80's and 90's then you can't go wrong with this dvd. Great matches featuring great superstars- Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Bret Hart, Randy Savage, Jake The Snake Roberts, Ted DiBiase, Dusty Rhodes and many more and great commentary from Gorilla Monsoon, Jesse Ventura and Rowdy Roddy Piper. These are two of the best...

As technically proficient as the WWE product is in 2010 (pay-per-views can normally be relied upon to deliver at least a couple of quality matches IN the ring) there is, for me anyway, just not the excitement that there has been in the WWF's glory years. The same old names facing the same old names with ponderous "storylines" to back them up. To that extent the only wrestling I really watch these days is the "classic" stuff that is available on DVD...hence the delivery of this Tagged Classics set as a birthday present.

The 1989 Survivor Series may only contain five matches, but all are given the time to breathe (all clocking in at just over 20 minutes apiece) and are chock full of genuine "name" superstars (although to be fair there is a fair sprinkling of dud names in there as well). The opener is entertaining (even with the predictable nature of some of the action, such as Bad News Brown's elimination) and Randy Savage does a remarkable job of carrying the dead weight he is saddled with, and indeed pitted against, in the second match, with the spirited opposition of Bret Hart another highlight. The effective way in which Hart shows his "upset" at losing is something many current WWE stars could learn from as well.

The Hulkamaniacs Vs The Million $ Team is as entertaining as you might expect given the rivalries on show, whilst it's a great pleasure to see Rick Rude and Mr. Perfect on the same team as the Rude Brood clash with Roddy's Rowdies. In preparation for his main event World Title run, the Ultimate Warrior is put in the main event position and even if the replacement of Tully Blanchard by Bobby Heenan sours the match slightly for me, The Rockers, Haku and Arn Anderson carry the match well and it's another entertaining affair. The glut of countout and disqualification eliminations throughout the evening wouldn't be tolerated in today's WWE but there's no denying that the story telling of 1989 is miles ahead of most of what we get over 20 years later.

1990s event saw the first, and only, appearance of the "Grand Finale Match of Survival", which in hindsight merely telegraphs the results of some of the matches. For instance, it's fairly clear that The Ultimate Warrior will ultimately survive the opening match, but his team's battle against The Perfect Team is still entertaining as an opening attraction. This is followed by a genuinely memorable WWF moment as The Undertaker makes his debut as part of the Million $ Team against Dusty Rhodes' Deam Team. Granted there was nothing in particular that would have suggested that 'Taker would go on to be one of the enduring superstars of wrestling that he did (the value of this match undoubtedly grows with the passing of time) but its fun to watch it today and he does have some excellent battles with Bret Hart during the match.

Despite The Rockers best efforts the match which pits Rick Martel's Visionaries against Jake Roberts' Vipers is barely adequate whilst the next match, pitting The Hulkamaniacs against the Natural Disasters, has to rely on Hogan's star power to overcome a lot of dead weight. It is a million times better, however, than the awful Alliance Vs Mercenaries match which follows it. Mind you, what can you expect from a match in 1990 that included Nikolai Volkoff, The Bushwhackers, Sgt. Slaughter and Boris Zhuukov? That said, you'd still probably rather watch that than the "hatching" of the Gobbledy Gooker; if you've no idea what that is then you are one of the lucky ones.

The show ends with the Grand Finale, which is nothing more than a match designed so that the Warrior and Hogan can finish the show bathed in the spotlight. Overall, 1990's show cannot match 1989's but there's enough action on it to make it worth a watch, especially given it's availability as part of this set.

If you hanker back to "simpler" days in the WWF, this is a great set to keep you entertained.
