5.0 out of 5 stars Mainstream Peterson - Swings but Gently, 25 July 2005

This review is from: Piano Moods - The Definitive Oscar Peterson (Audio CD)
For well over 50 years Oscar Peterson has been arguably the world's finest jazz pianist. Naturally talented and technically brilliant, he has an exquisite lightness of touch on the keyboard, and none of his arrangements or improvisations go so far off the original tune, or lean too far to the avant garde, to alienate all but the jazz enthusiast.
This collection is taken from his time with the Verve and MPS labels, from 1954 to 1971, certainly his most prolific and commercially successful period. The tracks mine the deep pit that is the Great American Songbook, with the odd excursion out to Liverpool and France, and they all swing, but gently, with the exception of Michel Legrand's "Windmills Of Your Mind", where something of a gale blows up.
They are all original recordings, digitally remastered, and they've done an great job on them - clarity and dynamic range are excellent, and only the very earliest recordings show any age. He is accompanied throughout by acoustic bass and percussion - the Oscar Peterson Trio; although over the years the personnel of his backing changed they were always top-ranking musicians and in perfect harmony with their master.
This set was first released seven years ago - you'll find the original, with its smokey blue cover, still in the listings here and that's where (at the time of writing) to find the tracklisting. Until the issue last year of "The Genius Of Oscar Peterson" it was just about the only "Very Best of..." collection of his work. It is a shame, then, that no less than eleven tracks come up on both sets. This one is probably the more mainstream of the two, and is great for the peaceful end of an evening - as someone who didn't really like jazz at the time, I bought it in 1998, loved it immediately, and it has been one of my favourite albums ever since.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oscar Peterson's Piano Moods with the Trio, 14 Feb. 2013

This review is from: Piano Moods - The Definitive Oscar Peterson (Audio CD)
If you want an introduction to the piano style of Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson, this double CD is a good place to start. Most of the 33 tracks feature one of the Peterson Trios - the personnel changed over the years. Thus we have Ray Brown, Jiri Mraz or Sam Jones on bass; and Ed Thigpen, Gene Gammage, Louis Hayes, Bobby Durham or Ray Price on drums. There are just a few tracks where Peterson solos on piano and a few more where there is an orchestral backing. Thus Milt Jackson appears on vibes on one track. As the CD title suggests, while most of the numbers are up-tempo, there are some slower pieces. Most display the kind of jazz ornamentation for which Peterson is well known; but in other tracks - like Porter's In the Still of the Night - the playing is tranquil and simple. This is a fine selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant compilation album displaying wonderful technique and beauty, examples from 1959 - 1973., 25 Dec. 2014
This review is from: Piano Moods - The Definitive Oscar Peterson (Audio CD)
This compendium of Oscar Peterson tracks has been around a long time (an early release with a different cover has been lurking on my shelves for a long time now). Thirty three tracks recorded over a period from 1959 - 1973 in various situations mostly trio, some with strings as well. The standard of playing is,of course, exemplary. Whether you wish to listen in detail, or play as background, this music hits the spot. Accessible music, mostly well known tunes or jazz standards.
I normally rate compilation albums down, but the quality of this double CD release (33 tunes) is remarkable and fully deserving five stars.
