5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Transcendence, 26 Mar 2002

This review is from: Dogs in the Traffic (Audio CD)
'Dogs In The Traffic' provided a dramatic shift from the stylised, polished funk of its more commercially successful predecessor 'Strange Kind of Love' to heralding the melancholic, acoustic-driven arrangements which would deliver chief songsmith James Grant considerable acclaim in subsequent years.
The nigh perfect record for a whisky-induced evening, 'Dogs In The Traffic' features Grant's songwriting at it's very finest. From the sublime pedal-steel balladary of 'You're Not The Only One' to the punchy 'My Love Lives In A Dead House', the album is an exercise in subtlety utilising strings and horns to uplifting effect over Grant's near-baritone vocal.
Love and Money's music had that rare combination of discerning melody and musical refinement which makes latter-day peers such as Travis appear sadly diluted and predictable by comparison.
The definitive release from one of the most talented bands Scotland has ever produced. No worthwhile collection should be starved of this album.

Wonderful departure in style and lyrics for L+M versus the SKofL etc. Superbly dark, emotional and introspective lyrics outwith Winter. Lips like ether is a beautiful, heartfelt masterpiece - an all time classic and was the first song at my wedding.

Easily their best work - BUY !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful re-discovery of an old friend, 7 Nov 2011
This review is from: Dogs in the Traffic (Audio CD)
Since buying the 1988 album "Strange Kind of Love" more than 20 years ago this has been one of my favourite records of all time. By coincidence i stumpled over the "Dogs in the Traffic" here at Amazon and bought it.

The album is a perfect follow up with a timeless funky 80'ies sound. The vocals are great the band plays tight and the songs are all high quality. The overall description of the album could be high quality melancholic soft funk-rock. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A culimination of sorts, 30 Jan 2009
This review is from: Dogs in the Traffic (Audio CD)
As a definite high water mark for the band and a somewhat ignored classic I fell hopelessly in love with this album. If you enjoy any of James Grants solo material then I would recommend this as the band are in top form. The heartfelt and clever lyrics alone push James into the stratosphere of classic songwriters but combined with his beautiful melody's and wonderful guitar work make this an undeniable five star album.

4.0 out of 5 stars ... it comes creeping up., 18 Mar 2011
This review is from: Dogs in Traffic (MP3 Download)
As stated in other reviews, this is step away from the excellent (and polished) Strange Kind of Love to a simpler set-up, and gives a glimpse of things to come from James Grant. It's a gorgeous album with some achingly emotional lyricsm and a lovely feel to the music. Well produced too: there is real feeling in the vocals and are well-placed in the mix and the instruments blend well: in particularly the precussion. It's an LP that gives more and more with repeated listens, and is definitely a record to be savoured: it's not just background listening.

My personal faves are "My love lives in a dead house" and "Papa Death".

For acoustic / semi-acoustic chilled-out rock, with a cerebral bent, this is well-worth a listen.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)

Excellent product by a group that unfortunately never really hit the big time. It makes you wonder why a group with this quality didnt seem to appeal to some when a lot of singers/groups who were inferior do make it.
