Roge's 1970s Debussy recordings were superb, the only regret being that he didn't record Book 2 of the Preludes. He redresses the balance here with a new complete set that ranks among the very best. For a start, the piano sound is absolutely marvellous, rich, sonorous and excellently recorded. The other great thing, of course, is what Monsieur Roge does with that piano. He crafts 24 flawless performances, exploring Debussy's ever-fascinating soundworld with deep control and sensitivity. Preludes such as "La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune" and "La cathédrale engloutie" emerge with astonishing depth and sonority, while he brings real joy to another of my favourites, "Les colliness d'Anacapri". Every mood is judged to perfection, but Roge wears his brilliance lightly. One of the treasures of his playing is that one never feels his regards himself in higher esteem than the composer. His love for the music is everywhere apparent, and I'm so pleased Onyx are making use of this great talent.
