5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 3 Sept. 2008

Hard to describe, but brilliant.

If, like me you're a fan of Yat-Kha (or perhaps Tuvan throat singing in general) anyway, you'll have an idea of what to expect.

The combination of throat-singing and pop-rock classics is strange to say the least but it really works for me. There is less vocal variety than you'll get from most of Yat-Kha's work but it's still a brilliant (but weird) achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars a strange and undefineable classic, 1 Oct. 2011

On this genre-defying disc, Yat Kha & Albert Kuvezin have produced a kind of music without a name. The band here goes beyond its original idea of fusing modern electronic instruments with the traditional acoustic Tuvan kind on to a brave reinterpretation of classic Western and Russian pop/rock and country tunes. The result is unsettling, captivating and awe-inspiring. From Carlos Santana's "black Magic Woman" to Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks", each track offer something different, distinct and novel, although all are marked by the deep deep gravelly overtone Kargyraa singing of Kuvezin. Stand out tracks (for me are "Ramblin Man" and Iron Butterfly's "In A Gadda Da Vida".

This is a disc that rewards repeated listening.

I'm a big fan of weird, genre-crossing music. Other faves include Dub Side of the Moon and the Bad Shepherds. But this takes the biscuit. Fantastic Tuva throat and overtone singing with a good fusion of traditional and pop backing. Highlights include Back Magic Woman and Love Will Tear Us Apart. This guy's voice is fantastic; makes Tom Waits sound like a pussy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 20 Jun. 2005
This review is from: Re-Covers (Audio CD)
Im not normally a fan of world music but since this album is sung in english (except for one track) it has bridged that gap. Obviously this will not be to everyones taste but if you want somthing refeshingly different as well as new life being breathed into some old songs its well worth a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Strange But Very Charming., 8 Aug. 2007

These guys are probably very trendy to go and see as they tour the world offering these strange vocals and instrumentally very different renditions of such famous songs. For me, Motorhead's 'Orgasmatron,' played in a radically acoustic style, plus the addition of this 'voice,' the sound as a whole is quite something. Of course, Bob Marley, Captain Beefheart, Joy Division, Led Zeppelin and Iron Butterfly fans will be equally transfixed with these 'new' renditions of their favourites, too. Most unusual, charming and novel, an album to both fascinate and gobsmack your friends with; whilst it will be something of a conversation piece at the same time.
