5.0 out of 5 stars Words Fail Me, 10 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Viktoria Mullova - Vivaldi: Violin Concertos (Audio CD)
Since having seen and heard Viktoria Mullova play the Chaconne by J.S.Bach in the international round-the-clock Bach jubileum concert on TV some ten years ago I have trusted Mullova more, when it comes to baroque music, than most other violinists not specialized in it. She plays most wonderfully here on this CD, too. Then there is Il Giardino Armonico enchanting me totally. The orchestra plays with a superb joy, energy and vivacity that hit me from the first bars and had me dancing on my chair when I first listened to this CD, and the fascination has continued and driven me to search for more recordings by them. How flat my words sound, compared to their playing. This is a record you want to hear over and over again. It makes your life feel lighter, and it makes you burst with joy to be able to share this delight with somebody dear.

This review is from: Viktoria Mullova - Vivaldi: Violin Concertos (Audio CD)
This is an excellent disc of five of Vivaldi's violin concertos, superbly played by both soloist and orchestra. There is a huge amount of Vivaldi around, some of it very good and some of it very dull, and this really stands out from the crowd.

Viktoria Mullova is simply brilliant here. She is a superb violinist and her wonderful technique allows her to make even Vivaldi's most virtuosic passages sound natural and unstrained. She also has the insight and musicality to bring the pieces to life so that they aren't just lots and lots of notes over a pleasing harmonic backing, but really sound as though they mean something. Her playing in the slow movements is exceptionally good and genuinely affecting in places; no pyrotechnics, of course, but fabulous control, tone and emotional depth.

Il Giardino Armonico also play superbly. They are flexible and supple, with a fine judgement of mood ranging from the delicately tender to real, rollicking vigour, and there is no hint anywhere of the unengaged, metronomic tum-ti-tum stuff which makes some recordings of Vivaldi so tedious.

I would recommend this very warmly, even to Vivaldi sceptics. Mullova and the ensemble really do produce something special here and it's a pleasure from start to finish.

(I would also warmly recommend Mullova's disc of Vivaldi double concertos with Giuliano Carmignola, which is another real gem. Vivaldi: Concertos for two Violins )

5.0 out of 5 stars 'MARVELOUS' MULLOVA 'RE-STRINGS' FOR A VIVALDI SPECTACULAR, 9 Dec. 2013

Five BAROQUE Stars!! Spectacular performances!! Award-winning super violin virtuoso Viktoria Mullova once again demonstrates she can string her 1723 Jules Falk Stradivarius with gut strings tuned to A415, and wield a baroque period bow with the very best of today's classical artists. In interpreting the violin concertos of Antonio Vivaldi with Grammy winning baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico under the leadership of Giovanni Antonini, she has produced a CD that is a pure treasure trove of some superb violin works of the "Red Priest", which bear his immediately recognizable rhythmic, harmonic, and compositional stamps. If you loved her definitive exposition of the Vivaldi: Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons) with Claudio Abbado and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and her excellent Beethoven, Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos and the Bach:Sonatas all using the 'baroque setup' and technique with differing violins, this Vivaldi period piece is just as wonderful.

The 'pieces de resistance' begin with the Concerto in D Major "Grosso Mogul" RV 208: the first and third Allegro movements have some astounding bow work by Ms Mullova in soliloquies that are just scintillating, as Vivaldi, a virtuoso violinist himself, intended. Ms Mullova's 'cantabile' execution of the Recitativo: Grave movement, proves once again that Mullova is among the very best violinists on planet Earth. The whirlwinds whipped up by the violins in Vivaldi's Concerto in B Minor for 4 violins are simply marvelous with many 'Four Seasons' allusions and splashes of sound: so good that Bach himself actually 'sampled' it for his four harpsichord work. Il Giradino Armonico proves once again that in today's world it truly is the 'harmonic garden' of Baroque music, 'playing as one' with Viktoria Mullova in the tradition. Bravo, Ms Mullova, Giovanni Antonini, and Father Vivaldi. The sound is clear, crisp, and immediate. My Highest Recommendation. Viktoria Mullova is AMAZING!! Five THRILLING Stars!!
