5.0 out of 5 stars Classic samurai adventure with an added depth!, 22 Nov 2000

This review is from: Samurai Banners [VHS] (VHS Tape)
'Samurai Banners' sees the commanding Toshiro Mifune at his best, playing an ambitious samurai warrior who longs for Japan to be united. Inagaki works wonders with the direction, the colourful battle scenes are spectacular, and even the title music is pure emotion. This film, besides being of a high quality in its own right, provides a most interesting and worthwhile viewing, especially for Toshiro Mifune fans and for those who just love the samurai genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Samurai Banners, 19 Mar 2006

This review is from: Samurai Banners [DVD] [2005] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Samurai Banners by Hiroshi Inagaki is rather unique among 'Jidai-geki'(period drama)films in Japan. It's one of those rare big budget historical epics in the same vein as Kurosawa's 'Kagemusha' and 'Ran', and as such it makes a nice change from your typical Samurai movie.
The story is about Yamamoto Kansuke, an ambitious warrior who dreams of uniting the war-torn Japan of the sixteenth century by joining the fearless Takeda clan. He proves his valour to Shingen, the clan leader, and becomes his right-hand man, helping the Takeda defeat their various foes. Unfortunately both Shingen and Kansuke fall in love with the same woman - Princess Yufu - and their constant fighting over her might lead them and the Takeda clan to disaster.
The costumes and sets are incredibly authentic, and it's obvious that Hiroshi has spent a long time getting the historical details correct, which is admirable. The only problem that arises from this is that for those who are ignorant on Japanese history the film might seem a bit confusing, although luckily there's a 32-paged 'historical explanation' as a part of the DVD extra features.
My other criticism of the film is the poor direction in some scenes, especially during the various battles, which are further spoiled by some badly choreographed fighting(seeing as this was a '60's production, these can be excused).

Despite this, the cinematography is great (the Japanese countryside looks wonderful!) and the acting, especially by Mifune is brilliant. I am also pleased to see that the picture quality is sharp and that the sound is clear, which is rare among Samurai DVDs in the UK.
All in all, this is a must have for any Samurai film fan, as well as anyone who enjoys epic movies. The image of hundreds of heavily armed and armoured Samurai clashing on the battle-field is rare in Japanese cinema and as a result it's always breathtaking to see it.
