5.0 out of 5 stars No rules, no time limits, no way out!
Who would win in a no rules fight between a Judo & Kung Fu fighter? Who would win between a boxer and a Karate guy? Only 1 way to settle it! Round up some of the burliest guys and put them in a big cage 2 at a time and let them battle it out with limited rules (no eye gouging or biting), no rounds and no referee.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for budding MMA historians .... but production is a little poor and fights are a little amatuerish.
When I was young Id often ponder on what would happen if a Kung Fu expert tangled with a Jujitsu master, or if a boxer met a wrestler etc. Suddenly that was possible with the start of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Unfortuneatley, it would be a while before the UFC (or MMA to the more knowledgable fan) would develop into the sport it is today. This DVD is...

Introducing the Gracies to the world, this family of Brazilian ground fighters proved you don't need to be big to be hard. See Royce (pronounced Hoyce) choke, strangle, twist and manipulate his opponents into submitting! How useful is Western Boxing when someones got you on the floor with the air being choked out of you? Not very it would appear!!
As someone who's watched MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) grow and develop this is a must buy purchase. For any martial artist this is a must buy as it shows the effectiveness of styles in real combat.
Sometimes brutal, but entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent old-school fighting action, 17 Sept. 2012

I found this very entertaining and quite amusing. It's a bit like Nintendo Street Fighter with the different martial arts coming together. You get big, fat out of shape guys, muscle-bound wrestlers, bizarre shorts, a boxer with one glove, kickboxers, Ninjas and more. To call it MMA is really a misnomer. it's not mixed martial arts, it's single martial arts vs each other. I find this more illuminating than the MMA of today which all looks pretty samey as they've all converged onto the same skill-set.

Don't want to spoil it but it turns out grappling in the form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more effective than striking arts. This seems to be because the strikers only trained against other strikers had had not a clue what to do when it went to ground, whereas the grapplers not only knew about the groundwork but also how to neuter the strikers game. Thus the legend and myth of Gracie BJJ was born. of course today all the strikers have learned the counters to the takedowns and enough groundwork to hold their own,

Anyway, this is ESSENTIAL viewing for martial arts fans. It's brutal and it's real.

4.0 out of 5 stars UFC - the beginning, 9 July 2005

Raw violence and embodies what UFC was meant to be about, ie forget the rules.
Can be very nasty and not for the faint hearted. Don't blink.

This is where it all began and if you are a UFC fan I would highly recommend you watch how it all began.

Only rules are no eye gouging, no low blows. That's about it, not even weight classes.

I think this was a pioneering event as fighters from all over the world were pitted against it each. Weight, wits, strength, intelligence, all are at play here. It really seems like no one knew what to expect and I found every fight really interesting. Also keep in mind that the whole event is one night and the finalists altogether fight three times in one night. Once you win a fight, you go onto the next round in the same night.

This is an absolute must for any fan of UFC. See how it all began, with real 'style vs style' fighting. This is not like modern day UFC, it's real no rules fighting (okay maybe one or two rules), seeing someone get his toothed knocked out is not likely these days!

This DVD is still good to watch but most of the fighters havnt a clue about mixed martial arts and therefor most of the fights look amatuerish but still brutal. It is quite funny aswell, especially when a boxer comes out to the octagon wearing a solitary boxing glove .... what was he thinking?

This DVD is still entertaining but the production value differs greatly from the UFC's slick production of today. If your a fan of MMA then this should be in your collection for mainly historic purposes.
