This review is from: Un Ballo in Maschera: Masked Ball [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Un Giuseppe Verdi: Un Ballo in Maschera - Sir Georg Solti [1990]

This 1990 Salzburg Festival performance was to be conducted by Herbert von Karajan who died nine days earlier and Solti took over at short notice. This undoubtedly contributes to a slight unease in the performance of a very fine cast and production.

However the quality of the performances by Placido Domingo as Gustav, Josephine Barstowe as Amelia, Leo Nucci as Renato, Florence Quivar as Ulrica, and Sumi Jo as Oscar shine through on subsequent viewings when the staging and acting assumes a lesser significance (for this opera enthusiast at any rate).

For some reason the voice of Sumi Jo is more distant that the rest of the cast, but apart from this the sound and photography are first class.

This will probably become my first choice for Ballo.
