3.0 out of 5 stars Main track is lovely.....average overall, 9 Jun. 2005
This review is from: Side Streets CD1 (Audio CD)
In the last 6 months i've become obsessed with Saint Etienne, ever since snapping up their "Smash The System" compilation in a sale. They have the most fascinating aesthetic of any band....so naturally i rushed out and bought this new single (and for the record, HMV have it cheaper than Amazon do, which is unusual).
I excitedly stick it in the player, and its all over in....7 minutes or so. "Side Streets" is a great track, albeit less upbeat than most Etienne material, but the B-sides, whilst not being dreadful, are extremely short, and not as enthrawling as they could be. "The Leyton Art Inferno" (track 2) is a nice enough instrumental, but dies after just 2 minutes, and leaves you wanting more. The last track leaves you feeling just the same (though it has vocals this time). As a result, i deem this single as an item for Etienne diehards only, not really worth the bother for the lay listener (though at least you get a video!).
I should also be critical of the fact that two parts to the single were released. The first part contains just one (reasonable) B-side and nothing else, the disc is barely 5 minutes long in total....and it could easily have been included in the same CD as this one. Fair enough, it helps the chart position...but seems highly unecessary.
If you want GOOD Saint Etienne singles, listen to those from past albums...."Sylvie" (part1) contains three very interesting and enjoyable B-sides as well as the main track, and is so good overall that it can be treated as a mini-album. The same goes for "The Bad Photographer", "Avenue" and "You're In A Bad Way" which all serve as thoroughly enjoyable mini-album experiences. The latter certainly exhibits a sense of humour also.
This single will [hopefully] make the Top 40 this weekend, but if you like the track and want to know more, i advise you to buy their new album. The single (as a complete disc) is not a grower.
