5.0 out of 5 stars The women - all about men - jungle red fingernails - a timeless movie

The film was based on Clare Boothe Luce's play of the same name One of the great successes of its day, the film starred screen goddesses Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Lucile Watson, Mary Boland, Marjorie Main, Virginia Grey, Phyllis Povah, Florence Nash, Ruth...

This is not the film I thought it was. I remembered it as witty and pro-women but actually it is the most dreadful sentimental hogwash around. However there are some great performances and if one can avoid the dreadful message it is worth a look. No surprises but a few good vignettes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absence of Men, 13 Jun. 2007

Although men centre greatly in this movie and the effect of their thoughtless behaviour is the core of the story line for all the female characters their absence makes this an outstanding aspect of the film. After you have watched the movie you could almost convience yourself that they were active on screen. However the strong acting and dialogue of the principle women leave no room or need for their presence. This is a girl power movie circa 1939. Nothing changes - essential viewing.

Love this film, it is a remake and has been remade again and again, but this version is in my opinion the only one worth watching.
Witty, funny, entertaining, glamourous and very well acted on every level.
Great story, great film, great women

Have always loved this movie but until now it's been impossible to obtain it on DVD especially for region 2. Thankfully blue ray has sorted out this problem. Wonderful performances from all involved and is still a delight to watch!

5.0 out of 5 stars World of Women, 25 Sept. 2011

In this famous 1939 comedy, Norma Shearer stars as a married woman in her thirties who finds out through malicious gossip that her wealthy husband is having an affair with a perfume shop girl. Mary's life is thrown out of balance and she has some difficult choices to make, which may either prove to be the choices that empower her or the ones that will tear her sensitive soul apart. An all female cast truly sets the scene for a film swallowed by the world of women although the story focuses on their problems with men you won't see any males even in the extras. Crawford stars as her usual ice queen self and does a brilliant job as expected. Don't head for the remake before watching this.

5.0 out of 5 stars old movies really are the best, 27 Feb. 2011

I was introduced to Norma Shearer with this film along with rosalind russell, it is a beautifully acted & written movie. How the director got so many great performances out of each actress, main and supporting is amazing.

The story is old and a bit dated with the ideals, but with so much to enjoy it doesn't detract, especially at the end and Mary Haines fights back, "Jungle Red"

Take the time to watch this film and enjoy the humour and story.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOOKS LIKE A MOVIE MADE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS NOT 1939, 12 Oct. 2014

Stunning blu ray quality of a classic movie from 1939 - so much better than the awful and tepid rehash (not remake) with Meg Ryan.
Faultless....
