What a shame he was called the British Bob Dylan. he wasn't and this CD shows what a very talented young man he was. His songs still speak to me all these years later from when I watched him on TV in the '60s. His songs, so different from Dylan's - hence the 'no comparison - are beautifully crafted and so well sung. There are real classic folk gems on this CD and it is well worth buying.

After continually having "Catch the Wind" on my mind since it played in a very sad "Casualty", I just had to get a copy for myself. Having not heard Donovan for many years, and with this particular CD containing songs I knew, it was a trip down memory lane. The songs contain some very poignant words, especially "Universal Soldier". My favourite, of course is the very beautiful "Catch the Wind".

Time's not been kind to Donovan, his recordings still left alone by the very generation (ie the new alt-folk movement) which should have been enjoying him. Maybe it's an image-thing, with him never recovering credibility after the cruel savaging by his Bobness on Don't Look Back, and Donovan always seeming to present himself in the last-fashion-but-one; the Dylan cap long after Lennon threw his away, those terrible, hippy/faux-Eastern frocks from 1969...and perhaps, like Nick Drake, he should have died looking Beautiful and Tragic. Whatever the case, to listen to these early recordings (most of them made when he was only 18 or 19) is a real surprise. They're fresh and beautifully played, and with nothing fake or added in (and incidentally, contrary to received wisdom, owe more to Bert Jansch et al than to Dylan). He sings beautifully, and the guitar-playing's clean and intricate. Sunny Goodge Street, Deed I Do and several tracks here are actually as good as anything on Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left. An excellent album.

I loved this.. Brings together so many of Donovan's best work. A really good price also. A good one for old fans and newcomers to Donovan's work.
