This review is from: Panic Beats [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Just recently watched Panic Beats again for the first time in a while so thought I'd review it now. Starring Spanish horror legend Paul Naschy - the story has him and his wife heading off to spend some peaceful time at his remote ancestral home so she can recover from her recent illness. However, It's not long before she is haunted by mysterious visions and all round bizarre goings on...
This one is mostly recommended to those who love their Euro horror with great atmosphere and don't mind a fairly slow burner. Others may find it a bit slow moving. The film starts in magnificent fashion with a sequence of Alaric de Marnac (Naschy's character from Horror Rises From The Tomb) chasing down a woman on horseback and killing her. It's a fantastic sequence and sets things up nicely for a great atmospheric&Gothic horror film. Naschy's character is supposed to be the descendent of Alaric de Marnac you wouldn't call Panic Beats a sequel to any earlier film. In my opinion this is great film that has pretty much everything you'd want from a Naschy film although it's still not amongst his best works. The DVD front cover boasts of it containing some of the most brutal murders ever filmed. Of course that's a total nonsense but one of the deaths in particular is very gory and brutal. But in general it's far more about the Gothic atmosphere as well as the cool twists and turns through out.
Panic Beats is entertaining all the way through in my opinion. Great release from Mondo Macabre too.
