4.0 out of 5 stars Great series, lazy DVD, 17 May 2005
This review is from: Yes, Prime Minister - Series Two [1987] [DVD] (DVD)
First the good news. This is a DVD of one of the finest, funniest and cleverest comedies ever created, and in even an average DVD presentation would be a definite five stars. However the BBC, renowned for releasing some of the laziest, cheapest DVDs out there, have today plumbed new depths. Series 1 was released in the usual box, with no special features at all, on a single double-sided DVD with no apparent effort made to improve the sound or picture quality.
Series 2 is exactly the same. Except it's released on two single-sided DVDs, instead of one double-sided DVD. The quality seems the same, so why two DVDs? But here's the thing that spurred me to write this : They haven't bothered to even print the title on one of them! It's 2 virtually-identical sides, and unless you peer closely you can't tell which way is top.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughing my socks off!, 12 July 2006

Starting as the previous series left off, we are placed ringside to watch the tug of war between the civil service and the PM. Starting with Humphrey, for reasons beyond common sense, trying to derail Hacker's ambitious plan to save money and slash unemployment by moving military forces "up north", the series once more causes involuntary convulsions of the laugh muscles throughout. Political satire at its very best.

There are 2 DVD's this time; not a single two-sided one - which is fine, but something to make note of.

8 Episodes of pure brilliance! It is one of the funniest series out on the market today. The way it potrays the goings on inside "Number 10" are hilarious and beleivable. I seriously recommend this DVD!

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic, 6 Aug 2009

It's amazing how little has changed in the world since these shows were first broadcast. The dialogue is sharp, the observations spot-on and the situations hilarious - the shows still feel topical. Even the fact that these shows were recorded in glorious mono and a "square" picture ratio don't detract from the obvious quality. Highly recommended!

It would have been 5-stars but for two things: the double-sided DVD (a bit annoying, but not the end of the world) and the lack of any "extras".

This second and last series of the excellent Yes, Prime Minister show finishes one of my favourite sitcoms with another eight great episodes. Although the episodes in this series are not the classics that some of the previous series included, they are still frighteningly well written and far funnier than the vast majority of modern sitcoms.

The Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister series has always been both funny and surprisingly relevant to today's politics. Everyone involved gives great performances, especially the late Nigel Hawthorne as Sir Humphrey (who is probably one of my all-time favourite comic characters). Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister are examples of total brilliance and I would recommend them to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Biting British Satire at its Best, 3 Mar 2006
This review is from: Yes, Prime Minister - Series Two [1987] [DVD] (DVD)
This is such a shrewd and funny commentary on the way British government (still) works that it's a must see for any fans of satire or just for the excellent writing.
Despite the fact it's nearly 2 decades old (!) it remains sharp and funny, in a large part, due to the brillant acting by Nigel Hawthorne, Paull Eddington and Derek Fowlds. They all click so well they could have been doing it for real.
Hawthorne's Sir Humphrey has to be one of the most deviously machiavellian performances ever broadcast - a true master class in spin! The real joy is how this has to be used every episode to retrieve the idiot politician from a near catastrophic disaster of his own making. This farce frequently leads to the whole of government being brought to it's knees by the egotistical Hacker's insecurities.
Great fun and very repeatable.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best British comedies ever, 16 May 2004

Yes Prime Minister picks up where Yes Minister left off. The only change is that Jim Hacker is now the PM and Sir Humphery is now the Cabinet Secretery, the most senior position in the civil service. Despite Jim's rise to the top job in British politics Humphery is still able to prevent him changing anything. As Jim's political advisor puts it "It's a battle between the political will and the adminastrative won't"
The best two are probably 'The grand Design' Where the new PM is trying to sort out Britan's defence policy, will he really upset the Americans by cancelling the order for 'TRIDENT'? Not if Sir Humphrey can stop him.
and 'A Diplomatic Incident' The UK and the French can't agree on something, as usual, this time it's over the Soverignty of the Channel Tunnel. The French, however, try to cause a major incident which vertualy paralyses the civil service for a week, to get their way. Can Sir Humphery sort it out before news reaches The Queen or will he be looking at serving the rest of his time in the civil service working at the DVLA in Swansea? (a fate worse than death for a civil servent)

4.0 out of 5 stars Another entertaining series of squabbling and scheming, 29 April 2014
This review is from: Yes, Prime Minister - Series Two [1987] [DVD] (DVD)
The second series of Yes Prime Minister sees Jim Hacker continue to struggle in his reign as Prime Minster especially with his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey stomping on any of his ideas and his Private Secretary stuck between the two.

While the second series of Yes Prime Minister still doesn't quite match up to the quality of Yes Minister, it still features clever plots, and brilliant and hilarious dialogue which would put most of today's sitcoms to shame.
