4.0 out of 5 stars A slow starter, but ultimately rewarding
Peter Egan, the nominal star of this serial, makes his first appearance in episode 3. In the first two episodes we see his childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. The pacing is very slow at the beginning. Flashback sequences would have alleviated this, but the programme can be seen as an excellent antidote to the frantic cutting of modern television productions...

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Spy
Super Amazon service as usual. Never saw the series when first aired. Overall good acting but basically thought it slow and boring. Kept thinking it would take off and had to get better. Perhaps the dramatisation by Arthur Hopcraft of the Le Carre novel is not the best. Never have been a fan of Peter Egans acting and this just re inforced that opinion.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Spy, 16 July 2012

Not as good a series as the two Smiley's, and frankly not enough action. Ray Mcnally as usual was superb, and Peter Egan was pretty good.
However, the quality of the DVD replay was poor, with no real blacks in the picture and a lot of vertical lines. I have both the Smiley
DVD's, and the print quality by comparison is far superior. I would have returned the product, but I fear any replacement would suffer
the same problems

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 25 Feb 2014

I bought this DVD on the strength of the magnificent BBC production of John le Carré's "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and was badly disappointed. The story is ploddingly told in chronological order (save for a brief moment at the start which recurs in the final episode) so the atmosphere and tension of the book are lost completely. The acting is thoroughly bad - except for Rick Pym (Ray McAnally, terrific), Axel (Rüdiger Weigang, intensely creepy) and a few of Rick's criminal sidekicks -, like in a 1940s amateur theatre production, with long artificial silences, brooding glances and sudden, entirely unconvincing outbursts of emotions (especially bad to the point of being unintentionally funny: Alan Howard as Jack Bortherhood and Jane Booker as Mary Pym). Peter Egan who plays the grown-up Magnus Pym is just a void where an enigma should be - zero charisma so you wonder how this rather boring chap manages to charm so many people. It does not help that in the early episodes Magnus as a boy and teenager is portrayed by other actors who do not bear the slightest physical resemblance to Egan. The unimaginative, pedestrian approach by the director Peter Smith and his scriptwriter Arthur Hopcraft to this potentially fabulous material is best exemplified by the final camera shot which shows in completely unnecessary gruesome detail what we all knew had happened off camera, as if they did not trust their audience to have even a minimal dose of imagination or intelligence. A truly bad piece of television.

I couldn't finish it. Unpleasant cruelty to the young boy, seemingly with no prospect of it letting up. Very disappointed.

No big movie plot and somewhat predictable, but fun to watch good actors. Will watch it again from time to time.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, But Not Up To The Other John Le Carré's TV/Movies, 4 April 2012

I really was not impressed by this with very little plot and even less subplots. Much slower watching too than the others. This could have been with two disks, not three.

After seeing this AFTER 4/5 Stars Tinker, Smiley, In From The Cold, I rate this in last place for buying it or watching it. In fact, I have watched the others twice or more, this one will not be seen by me again.
