To all who love Lieder, a gift!
50 years ago , a student-friend introduced me to this song cycle with an LP of Dieskau with Gerald Moore as accompanist. Dieskau needs no praise from me. On this DVD, his interpretation reflects an old man's humour as well as regret that romantic passion is short-lived; whereas the early 1960s recordings indulge the young man's passion for a miller maid to the full. As to the equally important role of the piano accompanist, Moore is less demonstrative and - to my taste - more subtle than Schiff's sometimes heavy-handed interpretation. Well, it's a matter of taste.
Personally, this DVD is something of a dream I never had. That I should be present at at a Dieskau recital. Unbelevable.
