This review is from: E-Pro (Audio CD)
Let's compare this with a track from Odelay, one that's most similar- Devil's Haircut.
E-pro is heavier and more driven, with a powerful, foot stomping riff guiding it through. Devil's Haircut is more laid back than E-pro as it is filled with different samples and the guitar weaves in and out of Beck's vocals. E-Pro sees Beck's voice more mature and less at the forefront- some of the words are difficult to make out. Plus, with lyrics such as "see me coming to town with my soul" and "I won't give up that ghost", it seems a little bit more introvert.
But don't get me wrong, this song isn't morbid- it's first and foremost a rock party record, with hip hop drums sampled from the Beastie Boys. This makes it glossier and much more uncompromising than anything on Odelay (perhaps bar Minus) and the whole thing combined with the dreamlike and colourful Shynola Video says that Beck has made an eclectic and innovative comeback.
