This review is from: Ellington '66 (Audio CD)
Just as Sinatra in the 60's decided to engage with the modern music scene in the mid 1960's, so did Ellington, with similarly mixed results. Its not the idea is a flawed one, more that the choice of material could have been more carefully considered. So we get some great arrangements of tunes like 'Charade' and 'People' closely followed by misconceived takes on Beatles songs like the mambo styled,'All My Loving'. However, throw in a great version of 'Satin Doll', a beautiful 'Moon River' and the new offering ' Ellington '66' and what you have a very nice collection indeed. O.K, there is not a lot of room for soloing, but the ensemble work and recording quality is excellent.

If you are new to Duke, this is not the place to start, but those of us who have all his major releases should at least consider adding this little gem to their collection. Yes in places it could be considered a little bland, and yes there is an element of trying too hard to broaden the fan base but even so I think this a great little set. Not absolutely top set Duke and by no means essential, but as a bit of fun, this album works a treat.
