I have always been a big fan of Benny Hill. Sheesh nonsense, but there are time when you need to laugh at silly stuff. These are the very early Hill work, most Yanks have never seen, culled from the Benny Hill Show which ran on Brit telly from 1955-1968.

The quality reflects this, but hey, all shows of this period will. In a way, it add that "time capsule" feel.

The jokes are corny, the skits sublime. For anyone who is a BH fan this is a must!

Whatever your views of Benny Hill's later work, he was in the Fifties and Sixties a true TV pioneer, and ironically every bit as original and even alternative in his day as his later detractors were in theirs. His pre-Thames show ran on the BBC and sometimes ATV from the mid-Fifties until the late Sixties and specialised in spoofing other TV genres and programmes using video editing techniques they were probably inventing as they went along. This DVD, produced by BBC America and inexplicably never available in the UK, contains three approx 60m compilation programmes of sketches from the BBC shows of (mostly) the 1964-8 period which were previously released in the USA on VHS. There is a further compilation of around half an hour as a DVD bonus. Some of the sketches are on YouTube and many are familiar from various old LPs and from remakes during the Thames years (Benny was a voracious re-user of material) but I found it an excellent compilation, often laugh-out-loud funny and not in a bawdy sense. You do need a long memory to get many of the cultural references, though.
On this evidence, Benny's career is due a reappraisal in the UK.

This American DVD is crammed full of Bennys earliest BBC work....its black and white, devoid of half naked women (but we have the great Patricia Hayes) and the humour is very inventive, sharp and shows how he was TVs comedy king. Such a shame NONE of the content has been released on dvd in the UK. MUST SEE purchase for Benny fans.
