This review is from: Chopin: Scherzi (Audio CD)
This recording of Chopin's solo piano music is certainly one of the most memorable recordings Demidenko made with Hyperion and one of the most uniquely gripping performances of 4 scherzos alongside Richter's famous 70s'live recording, Katsaris' crazy Teldec version and Pletnev's Carnegie Hall Live recording. It is in 'a class of its own' because, while taking much interpretative freedom in terms of tempi, dynamics and markings, he manages to let the music speak for itself most eloquently and convincingly. Another remarkable thing about his perfromance is the iridescent tonal colours that shimmers like a dream. Recording engineers have done an excellent job to capture it. The dazzling and exquisite performances of Introduction & Variations in E and Don Giovanni Variations make excellent fillers. DDD 1990.
