4.0 out of 5 stars A cunning conning-tower story
'Crash Dive' is one of those war movies that I grew up with and so it has a special kind of place in my psyche. No, it is not the greatest WWII submarine movie ever made - 'The Enemy Below' and 'Run Silent, Run Deep' are both ahead of 'Crash Dive' in my war-film league - but nevertheless 'Crash Dive' is one of those classic WWII films that any decent collection of same...

3.0 out of 5 stars Anne Baxter and Tyrone Power
A beautifully shot film with Anne Baxter in colour alongside Tyrone Power. They were better in 'The Razor's Edge', but this film is more about photography and production design than story.

'Crash Dive' is one of those war movies that I grew up with and so it has a special kind of place in my psyche. No, it is not the greatest WWII submarine movie ever made - 'The Enemy Below' and 'Run Silent, Run Deep' are both ahead of 'Crash Dive' in my war-film league - but nevertheless 'Crash Dive' is one of those classic WWII films that any decent collection of same would be incomplete without.
Made during 1943, it has a certain cachet that war films made after the war simply do not have - Tyrone Power left Hollywood for the Marines straight after playing his part of the Exec Officer, Ward Stewart - and the propaganda that could well have ruined this film remains muted in the background. The characters are full and complete and we are given little snippets of their innermost thoughts and feelings as the film progresses. The boat's commander and his executive officer are love rivals for the affections of the commander's fiancee played by the delightful Anne Baxter, but they cannot afford to let their feelings endanger the boat and their mission to seek and destroy Nazi Q-ships that are sinking vital Allied shipping. This Fox Studio [Twentieth Century Fox] production won Best Special Effects in 1943 and Dame May Whitty's portrayal of Ward Stewart's grandmother is quite outstanding.
I suppose that if you are younger than 40 years old, this film will not have the same connection as it does to us more mature citizens, but on a wet Sunday afternoon with a good cup of tea and your biscuit/s of choice, this Technicolor film will reach the parts that many other films get nowhere near . . . . . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars Tyrone, Dana and Anne in choppy waters., 29 Jun 2014

Crash Dive is directed by Archie Mayo and written by Jo Swerling and W.R. Burnett. It stars Tyrone Power, Dana Andrews, Anne Baxter, James Gleason, May Whitty and Harry Morgan. A Technicolor production out of 20th Century Fox, music is by David Buttolph and cinematography by Leon Shamroy.

It’s flag waving time, 1943 style as Power and Andrews vie for the love of Baxter whilst conducting a submarine offensive against the Nazis. The love triangle feels twee but Mayo manages to keep it in check and not let it bog this particular sub movie down. When the pic is out on the water it’s grand entertainment, nicely filmed and featuring Oscar winning effects work. Momentum is gradually built until the finale comes and delivers an action packed bonanza. Hooray! 7/10

1.0 out of 5 stars underwater and undercooked, 28 May 2014
This review is from: Crash Dive [DVD] [1943] (DVD)
Perhaps the worst submarine movie to emerge during the war years. Tyrone Power and Dana Andrews compete for the love of Anne Baxter. It would have been better if the two male leads had ended up in real life at Corregidor or Bataan. What was Fox thinking of to present this dross to the public ? This submarine movie is matched only by the cold-war turkey, "The Hunt for Red October".

A typical War film of those days. Tyrone Power, the handsome boy of the late thirties and early forties and Dana Andrews which looses a beautiful Anne Baxter with fairness and dignity...GV

Somewhat disappointing, was expecting a good war piece. Has a silly romantic 3way thing to it. Spoilt it for me. Quick delivery over Christmas, thankyou.
