Partially based on true events, Goldie Hawn plays a mother trying to get her son back from the state after being declared unfit for motherhood along with her busted out of prison husband. They take a cop hostage along the way and the rest is an absorbing road adventure.

Spielberg proves he was always a masterful storyteller. The film is paced well and we are shown the human but tainted side of our heroes each step of their journey. The cinematography and scenes are beautifully done. The movie reminded very much of Terence Malicks Badlands.

The acting is great and you really care about what happens to them which is a job well done. Spielberg proves right here like Lucas with American Grafitti that they did indie really really well when they had to. Pity they moved on to bigger fish (literally in Spielbergs case)....9/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Spielberg classic, 8 Jun 2007
This review is from: The Sugerland Express [DVD] (DVD)
There is a certain quality about all films made around this time. The cinematography in this film is outstanding, the acting is good and although the film is fairly long, it moves at a fast enough pace to hold the viewer's attention. An absorbing road movie/drama based on a true story.

This is one of Spielberg's very best films, a low-budget road movie made after the TV film "Duel", and I rate it alongside Jaws.
Great cinematography, pace and some terrific acting (I especially love the dialogue between the old couple in the car at the roadside)
And although it's about a dysfunctional family par excellence, there's not a teddy bear or little boy looking for his lost father in sight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Criminally Under-rated Road Movie, 5 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Sugerland Express [DVD] (DVD)
The Sugarland Express is very loosely based on the true story in May 1969 of Robert and Ila Faye Dent. The film develops into possibly the slowest ever police chase road movie. There are lots of great set pieces along the way, and the cinematography is outstanding throughout.

This was Spielberg's first feature film, preceding Jaws by a year, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind by three. Previously he had directed a couple of TV films (Duel being the most famous), and a few episodes from shows like Night Gallery and even an episode of Columbo.

Despite playing unlikeable leads in a downbeat film, both Goldie Hawn and William Atherton give great performances. If you enjoy Bonnie & Clyde - 40th Anniversary Edition [DVD], Badlands [DVD], Dirty Mary Crazy Larry & Race With the Devil [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC], or just road movies in general then I am sure you will find something to like in this wonderful film.

Ratio - 2:35 Anamorphic Widescreen
Sound - 2.0 Mono
Subtitles - English (despite the back cover stating 'None')

4.0 out of 5 stars Based on a true story, 31 July 2009
This review is from: The Sugerland Express [DVD] (DVD)
This movie is over 30 years-old, but holds up well. The story is moving, yet not all very sentimental. Many believe that THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS was a flop in cinema. This is not true. The original film earned over $8 million in the USA in it's original release which at the time made the movie a modest success. It wasn't until a year later with the release of JAWS that the first $100 million movie would be distributed, setting a new standard of success in Hollywood.

7/10

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent early Spielberg - with a good sense of humour to boot, 10 Jan 2012

Sugarland Express was Spielberg's first feature film (Duel (Special Edition) [DVD] was released in cinemas only after its success on small screens) and is one of the better road movies of the 70s. A young Goldie Hawn playing a mildly delinquent mother bent on getting her son back - after being declared unfit for motherhood - and her prison escapee husband decide to kidnap a police officer in 1970s Texas and they jointly undertake a journey to Sugarland to claim their son. The film is vaguely based on true events from a couple of years earlier.

The movie shows much of Spielbergs potential and is excellently shot. The acting is good and while there is certainly some sentimentality, it is very well done (so it's not of the soppy variety). What rather surprised me, given the topic, was the frequent and excellent sense of humour brought to the film. There are a myriad of scenes, which get lightened for the viewer by a judicious societal criticism or interesting potshot. On top of that, one encounters a very different police force from what one is used to in movies (even from the 70s), one that is much more bent on serving society than on shooting everything that moves.

Overall it is an excellent film and well worth watching. It will not have the wild chase scenes or societal comentary of something like Vanishing Point [1971] [DVD] but it is a well executed (semi-) debut, with some inspired acting, and a good many hillarious scenes along the way. I expect it is one you will watch more than once, too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Real events are manipulatively distorted, 28 July 2014

Clearly there are many deft directorial touches. I was enjoying film immensely at the start, especially since it was based on a true story.
But by the end, I was disgusted. Texas police is shown as bumbling idiots. Only ones smart are criminals, expect for one or two scenes.
Depiction of police officers (kidnapped one is the dumbest beyond belief, helping his kidnappers), media and common folks (who shower criminals with gifts) is very distorted and far from real events.
The story is highly manipulative: it shows Goldie Hawn as fighting to gain custody of her kid, while in reality, no such custody was involved. The actual events happened over a few hours and the film shows them over a few days -- totally unrealistic.
Conclusion: Spielberg is a very good director but a bad (inconsistent/manipulative/unrealistic) story writer.

2.0 out of 5 stars 70's TV Quality; Buy Something Else, 11 Jun 2012

Unless you love Speven Spielberg so much that you have to have everything he's ever made for your collection, you can certainly skip this one. For starters, we are deep in the heart of Texas. We get the dubious but passable "treat" of Goldie Hawn doing a southern accent. Unfortunately, her prison-escapee boyfriend can't pull this off except for literally the occassional syllable. The rest of the time he's clearly just another actor from LA. It's a prolonged car chase with a bunch of police cars following the bad guys as if it was some kind of small town Fourth of July parade. In the 70's this might have been considered pretty good Thursday night TV. Thankfully, Steven and the rest of us have moved on a bit from that level of cinematic storytelling. Two stars is generous. I couldn't bring myself to finish watching it. By the way, prior to making this movie Speilberg was an itinerant TV director. So compared to an episode of Marcus Welby, MD, Sugarland Express was pretty edgy material.
