5.0 out of 5 stars Wimbledon fans glory day, 26 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Wimbledon V Liverpool - 1988 Fa Cup Final [DVD] (DVD)
With Wimbledon FC being franchised off and repackaged as MKDons this is an ideal reminder of what that move destroyed. The classic giant killing in english football facup final post war history. Wimbledon had risen through the leagues from entering the 4th division in 1977. 10 years later were finishing 6th then 7th in the top flight and were being presented with the FA Cup by Princess Di against the best team in recent memory.
The game itself for Dons fans is nerve wracking and nail biting, even watching it 16 years later. How does John Barnes not score? Is the ref correct to pull Beardsley back? Was it a penalty?
The game for the neutral and Liverpool fans is uncomfortable. Its not pretty, its a hard slog to the death. However the tactical nous delivered from Don Howe to the players in dealing with superstars like John Barnes is 1st class.
The actual footage is from the ITV coverage. Not ideal as Brian Moore is patronising. His sidekick for the day Ian StJohn is slightly more accomodating as he warms to the Dons as the game goes on whilst realising that the 4-1 thrashing expected, will not occur. There is only one worthy extra feature, an interview with the Dons players. You can see how wound up they were. Its energetic and they are hyped.
Overall, you arent buying this for technical qualities. You are a Dons fan and the game is on DVD. Replace that worn out Video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a lot of "under" in this dog, 31 Dec 2011
This review is from: Wimbledon V Liverpool - 1988 Fa Cup Final [DVD] (DVD)
I am neither a Liverpool or a Wimbledon fan but I was intrigued by this final since I first heard about it.

Wimbledon were by no means a poor side in 1988. They had a number of good player such as Beasant, Fashanu and Jones. They also had an excellent team spirit and had got to this final on merit.

That being said, the Liverpool team of the 80's was an All-Star team. They demolished teams for fun and won many an FA Cup and League Title during the decade. It pains me to admit this of course, being an Everton fan.

Liverpool were the favourites to win this match and Wimbledon have kind of gone down in history as loveable underdogs with a million to one shot. Watching this final, it's clear that this was not the case. Wimbledon play with heart and a fair modicum of skill in this final and they fight Liverpool nose to nose. Beasant has one of the better games of his career and the end result it well deserved.

This really is a great final and well worth checking out. I can't imagine a Don's fan not having it in their collection (And I'm sure that I'm not the only Toffee's fan who thought it was worth a purchase)

You also get the surreal visual of Princess Diana meeting "The Crazy Gang". She would have probably had more fun hanging out with them than whatever else she did that evening to be honest ;)

The heroes of the day, Sanchez and Beasant, leading by example as only those two possibly could. I'me an Evertonian, bought this DVD for posterity, 'cos the Reds are always beating us, as they did the following year I might add. Just an unexpected and splendid day for Beasant and co wasn't it, one for those lads to treasure, and of course a special mention should go to Princess Diana who was present on the occasion. 'Oh Davey and co you bloody beauts' would just about be my final conclusion here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wimbledon V Liverpool, 4 July 2011
This review is from: Wimbledon V Liverpool - 1988 Fa Cup Final [DVD] (DVD)
A Great DVD of a Great day, I'm an AFC Wimbledon fan so this was my team (before being hijacked) Commentary from the Legendary Brian Moore, who I prefer as the pitch of the voice does not get squeaky when excited. It just finshes a bit abruptly and my only suggestion for whoever produces these DVDS is to give us more of the actual programme, The Team on the bus, the walk on the pitch, interviews, atmosphere etc. However that aside a wonderfull DVD of a great match Liverpool were the orginal invincibles, That team even now would win the Champions League (IMHO). Wimbledon actually qualified for Europe but alas English clubs were banned. But we are on the up so its only a matter of time...and that will make another great DVD.
