4.0 out of 5 stars Better than you think, 6 Sep 2005
This review is from: Philips HP6461 Satinelle Massage Cordless Epilator (Personal Care)
I bought this epilator after a review of a similar one in The Times. In it the reviewer raved about how much better this epilator was from those in the past. As I find waxing expensive and painful and inconvenient I decided, after much deliberation, to give it a try.

Philips offer a 90 day money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied so I thought what have I got to lose?

The epilator is quite attractive looking especially when it is on charge as it glows red. It can be used both from the mains and after an 8 hour charge it can be used for about 25 minutes and then the batteries very quickly power down.

Philips recommend epilating after a bath or a shower but I haven't found it makes much difference.

I couldn't describe it as pain free, after all hairs are being ripped from your skin! However it is much more bearable than I was expecting. It hurts more in some places than others - the ankle area is a bit sore, but bikini, back of legs etc no problem. Not as painful as waxing, and you can go at your own pace.

Afterwards the skin goes red and a bit blotchy and feels rather hot - just like after waxing. They advise to epilate before going to bed so the skin has time to calm down overnight. Also it is a good idea to put a mild moisurising cream on afterwards - I have used Aqueous cream which seems to do the job.

I have had 2 x 25 minute sessions since purchasing the epilator two days ago and find it quite addictive! Apparently it gets less sore the more you do it, which is a bonus.

I won't be sending it back for a refund.

5.0 out of 5 stars If in doubt, go for it!!, 15 April 2007

I've never used an epilator before this one. I've hardly even waxed before, so I felt very vulnerable when it arrived!! It does look kinda scary before you get round to using it. But once I found the confidence to do a test patch I realised there was nothing to be scared of.

If I had to describe how this epilator feels, it's kind of like tiny electric shocks. It's completely bearable, though! Just a tingly feeling (if you can cope with the pain of body piercing or tattoos this should be a doddel). It does work really well, too. You sometimes need to go over the area a few times but it's smooth afterwards. As people have said before, I would use a moisturiser afterwards (aquious cream works well) just to soothe your skin as it does go slightly red afterwards. It is recommended that you epilate on an evening before bed as this will give the redness a chance to go away before you go out or anything.

On leg hair and finer hair it's absolutely fine. On bikini line/under arms I found it to be quite painful. I think I will get used to it though. I've had the product for about a week and I already love it!! Plus philips do offer a 90 day money back guarantee if you don't experince less pain the more you use the product. But I definitely wont be sending mine back!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 16 Sep 2005
This review is from: Philips HP6461 Satinelle Massage Cordless Epilator (Personal Care)
I was worried that this would hurt but it didn't. The first time that I used it I hadn't had my armpits or legs waxed for over 8 weeks so I was very hairy! It took less than a minute per armpit to totally de-hair it! It did hurt a little bit but the hairs were very long and I had a whole armpit full of them. Since then I have been using it once a week and it doesn't really hurt as there's only a few there to remove. My legs took about 30 mins to do both legs from the ankle to knee and tingled a bit but I wouldn't say it hurt.

Overall I am very pleased, it has been an excellent purchase and will save me a fortune in waxing! The other bonus compared to waxing is that it just pulls out the hairs and doesn't pull your skin.

Would recommend highly.

This is the first epilator I have bought afer waxing for many years and I am totally converted. It is quite loud but really does the job well, the extra pounds I have saved on buying this means I can have some new shoes and bags! A fab product and well worth the cost x

I've been a waxer for the last 3 years and have been considering buying an epliator as waxing is a little messy. I bought an epliator (read the reviews telling me that it was amazing painful) and crossed my fingers.

Its nothing! If you can cope with waxing then this is a walk in the park. It was loads quicker, neater and much less hassle. I wouldn't hesitate in buying another if something happened to this one :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloomin Marvellous - A REALLY Great Investment, 21 Jun 2007

After reading all of the reviews on this product, I went and bought one. As soon as I got home with my Philips HP6461, I immediately tried it as I had been toying with the idea of getting an epilator for a couple of months and had got sick of ending up with a shaving rash.

I was completely wowed by how easy it was to use. Even when I got it out of the box I didn't need to plug it in as it already came with charge on the battery although I do recommend that once you get addicted to it after your first strip, that you plug it in so that you get the maximum epilation.

I like this product because not only is it cordless when you need it to be, but being Latin, my hairs grow where ever I don't want them to so I can just use the epilator to get rid of them now without the hassle of waxing strips that leave sticky patches.

To get used to what the "pain" was like initially, I started with my knees and then was confident that I could do the whole leg without wincing.

For those of you who aren't decided about whether to get an epilator or not, I'd say just buy this one for the price of one wax session. You won't be disappointed as it'll prove its money's worth!

4.0 out of 5 stars TIPS FOR EPILATING VIRGINS..., 28 May 2007
This review is from: Philips HP6461 Satinelle Massage Cordless Epilator (Personal Care)
I had never waxed or epilated before and was terrifed as everyone had said how much it hurts...but going on holiday in 2 weeks and not wanting to shave everyday I had no choice.

1)Do a tiny tiny patch at a time - its not like shaving where your leg will dry or waxing which you cant really just leave on. do half an inch, let that stop hurting and do another half an inch.

2) Do use talc first, dont know why but it does help.

3) Do it from every angle so you catch every hair, I didnt feel the 'massaging' bit worked very well so I generally ignore it now.

4) Shave first! I did my legs from forrest status and had to stop but if you catch them as they are growing back then it doesnt hurt anywhere near as much. this is especially true of armpits...but you still have to be brave with them as it hurts for much longer.

It does hurt AND it doesnt get rid of every single hair, missing the fine ones and the short ones and also you cant show your legs for 12 hours as they go red BUT it is better than shaving (less messy and lasts longer), waxing (doesnt hurt as much), hair removal (less smelly and less messy), and laser treatment (less expensive).

Hope that helped...

5.0 out of 5 stars use any place, 8 Nov 2007
This review is from: Philips HP6461 Satinelle Massage Cordless Epilator (Personal Care)
i first bought an epilator about 3 years ago and found it a bit painful i then bought the philips satin ice epilator i used this without the ice pack i found this really good it was less painful and over time you dont feel pain.
i found this method easy and mess free unlike wax
i wanted a cordless epilator because i wanted to use it in the bathroom over the sink
i bought the philips 6461 massage epilator because it was cordless
my sister saw it and tried it she wanted one too
i recommend this epilator to most of my friends however most paid 50 pounds for the mains satin ice so have stuck with that cos they dont want to fork out another 50 however i sold my old one online and bought this.
its not pain free
its less pain than wax if you use slowly at first to remove large hairs and on the fast setting to remove the small ones
lasts 3 to 4 weeks
