A GREAT AND VERY ATMOSPHERIC WEREWOLF PICTURE - IF YOU CAN LOOK PAST THE REPETITION
on 13 June 2014
GINGER SNAPS BACK: THE BEGINNING is the "prequel" to GINGER SNAPS and GINGER SNAPS (2): UNLEASHED. Personally it's not only my favorite werewolf movie in general, it's also my favorite in the series, due to the unique and darker atmosphere and the incredibly well-working setting: 19th century Canada.
It doesn't offer anything new, though and it certainly will win no awards in originality.
Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins basically play the same characters as in the previous parts, just in the past. They both deliver very good and convincing performances.
The pacing is just perfect, the special effects overall quite good - no CGI here - just the werewolves looked better in the UNDERWORLD movies, they are just OK here.
GINGER SNAPS BACK: THE BEGINNING would have been better (probably also more successful) if it had been the first in the series simply because seeing the same actresses in the same roles with the same story won't appeal to everybody, but if you can look past this, you're in for a very good werewolf movie indeed!
