This is the first of three volumes (all double discs, so six CDs in all!) of main themes and incidental scores from four seasons of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. and it's a real labour of love. Do not confuse this with other patched-up rip-off UNCLE collections that purport to be authentic soundtrack recordings; they're not, this is!
Film Score Monthly are to be commended for making these scores available and in such pristine sound quality too. They follow chronologically, from 1964 to '68 and demonstrate the effort that was taken in commissioning appropriate 'mood' music episode by episode. Much of the music, especially for the first season, has an ethereal mixture of jazz, electronic and percussive techniques that just work really well. The test of good TV and film scores are, I think, that they can be listened to as musical works in their own right - and this collection passes that test admirably. The whole thing is hugely evocative of both the UNCLE series and the '60s era.
