terrific performance from Dennis Hopper, this tackles the taboo subject of sex and love amongst middle aged folk. The fact he has an affair with a teenage girl may seem to be an exploitive male fantasy, but the Hopper character is a decent man who feels his life slipping away from him and he takes the chance to have a dangerous adventure despite the potentially disasterous consequences, not least to his reputation. The rebellious teenager is believable, as is his long-term relationship with a fellow teacher, played beautifully by Amy Irving. Presumably its the difficult subject matter which caused this film to bomb, but it deals with the issues very well, plus all the characters are sypathetically played. Interesting and sad that viewers make more fuss about seeing the middle aged Hopper and Irving in the nude than they do about the wrecklessness of him having sex with a teenage pupil. This is an excellent and under rated film.

Very well acted by Amy Irving, allowing herself to look drab, and
older, and especially Dennis Hopper, who gives what might be his most
restrained performance ever, and creates an unforgettable character in
the process.

This tale of a mid-western US, self confessed 'mediocre farmer and
schoolteacher' having an erotic affair with a 17 year old student, and
the effect it has on his life, especially his long standing, but now
somewhat inert relationship with his fellow teacher, is really about
taking risks in life, even bad ones, and how we need those to stay
alive.

I like and admire that the film neither fully condemns or approves of
anyone or any action. Everything is complex.

Sadly, Amy Locaine as the girl, while stunningly beautiful, isn't at
the acting level of her older co-stars, nor his her character written
with the same kind of insight and precision, which hurts the overall
effect. And some of the writing is a little overly poetic and
theatrical.

Still, it's an unique film, dealing with sex, aging, morality, fear and
self-image in a far more complex, mature way than most American films,
and for once treats mid-western American farm folks as just as complex,
intelligent and tortured as their big-city counterparts.

This was a very low key sexual experience and was well acted by all. Reminded me of old time movies. Thought the script writer was excellent, should be more of these films. Would suit all age groups.

Its a cute film of circumstantial matters arising in an older man's life just when a young girl comes to town and starts school where the older man teaches.
Amy Irving plays the wife and I get the sense of a mature quality from her in this film - as I do with her real mother playing her character mother once more in this film.

I am not sure I got the idea the young girl was realistic enough to play a devilish function of tease to which all else falls apart, But it is a nice enough production and well filmed. Daft cover for this dvd but I like Denis Hopper as he always plays a gritty down to earth person and gives weight to any film.
