5.0 out of 5 stars Rookie of the Year (1993)
Rookie of the Year (1993) is a children's or young adult's baseball film. I first hired this one on VHS in 1995 and really enjoyed it. I was going though the movies of Gary Busey at the time, who was being offered some good roles like Point Break (1991), The Firm (1993), and Drop Zone (1994). The film is a light-hearted comedy, similar to Major League (1989), but with a...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good feel good film, for all those people that ever dreamed of being a hero
This is a good little sports comedy that revolves around Baseball, Thomas Ian Nichloas (Kevin in the American Pie films) plays 12 year old Henry Rowengartner, one day he breaks his arm in an accident, once his arm is out of plaster he discovers that his arm has healed incorrectly and now has a super fast pitching arm.

The film is a light-hearted comedy, similar to Major League (1989), but with a fantasy element. Although it fits into the children's film category, it can still be enjoyed by adults.

Henry Rowengartner (Thomas Ian Nicholas) plays in the little leagues, but dreams of one day being a professional baseball player. An accident during one of his games means that he is out of action for a while, due to a broken arm. The accident is nevertheless a blessing of sorts, as his tendons heal too tight. He now discovers he has preternatural strength in this arm and, whilst going to see the Chicago Cubs he catches the ball and throws it back from the stands, all the way to the home plate.

Henry is instantly hired by the club owners Bob Carson (Eddie Bracken) and Larry ''Fish'' Fisher (Dan Hedaya), despite doubts and concerns from his mother Mary (Amy Morton). He is taken under the wing of veteran pitcher Chet Steadman (Gary Busey), whose character is not dissimilar to that of Chelcie Ross' in Major League, the aging pitcher with an arm that may not last much longer. Other members of the Cubs include coach Martinella (Albert Hall) and Brickma (Daniel Stern). Mary nevertheless thinks that twelve year-old Henry should have a normal childhood first and his friends become jealous of his success.

His stepfather Jack Bradfield (Bruce Altman) thinks otherwise, for he can see the dollar signs mounting up. Along with Larry, Jack hatches a plan to sell Henry to the Yankees for a few million dollars. Meanwhile Mary is getting close to Chet, and further from Jack who treats Henry like a commodity rather than a child. This prompts Jack to have the deal signed and sealed. Will Henry remain at the Cubs and take them to victory? Like Major League there are the obligatory sports commentators including Cliff Murdoch (John Candy).

Rookie of the Year is an above average film in my opinion, despite mixed reviews on its release. It shouldn't be taken too seriously and I'm confident that fans of Major League will love it. The cast all put in good performances and there are plenty of laughs and more than enough drama to keep viewers interested. There is not much to say about the DVD itself, except that the picture quality and sound are good. There are no extra features worth mentioning. Other films that may be of interest (that I have seen and enjoyed) I have listed below:

*The Champ (1979), Jon Voight, Faye Dunaway
*The Karate Kid (1984), Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita
*Youngblood (1986), Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze
*Eight Men Out (1988), DB Sweeney, Charlie Sheen
*The Karate Kid II (1986), Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita
*Major League (1989), Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen
*The Karate Kid III (1989), Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita
*The Cutting Edge (1992), DB Sweeney, Moira Kelly
*The Rookie (2002), Dennis Quaid, Rachel Griffiths
& of course, the Rocky movies

3.0 out of 5 stars A good feel good film, for all those people that ever dreamed of being a hero, 15 Jun. 2008

He uses his new found speed for a sport that he's been struggling at, Baseball and is spotted at a local Chicago Cubs baseball ground and is signed by the owner as a pitcher, from thereon he's propelled into dreamland.

There are some good and cruel twists, good bits of comedy, Nicholas puts in a good performance, with good support from both Gary Busey and the late great John Candy, overall a good feel good film.
