4.0 out of 5 stars Classic reggae riddims make this more than just a novelty, 6 Feb 2005
This review is from: Star Trek (Audio CD)
Mixing easy-listening synthesiser and reggae, this is one of the stranger examples of Trojan's increasingly desperate attempts to achieve mainstream success throughout the '70s. Star Trek may be viewed by more serious reggae fans as nothing more than a novelty, of little appeal outside the post-ironic loungecore set. One thing sets this collection apart from the usual 'The Ring Cycle goes Moog!' charity-shop fare: the excellent reggae rhythm tracks, plundered from Trojan's extensive back catalogue.
A lot of the tunes are recognisable (Laurel Aitken's 'Dracula, Prince of Darkness' being a personal favourite) and the synthesiser complements the sound without intruding too much. Think of it as a collection of versions, with a synthesiser replacing the usual deejay, and you'll get the idea.
Also included is a complete bonus album, 'Interstellar Reggae Drive', which carries the same concept over to Creole Record's back catalogue. It's more of the same really, which is no bad thing, but particularly notable for 'Cosmic Bust' - perhaps the catchiest song I've heard in a long time.
I'm sure lots of people will buy it just for the kitsch cover. At least their purchase would be worthwhile, as this surpasses its novelty value and remains one of the best collections of synthesiser instrumentals there is, whether or not your a fan of reggae.

I have this album on LP and I was really scared to play it in case I dropped it or something. So seeing it on CD I had to have it. This really has to be one of Trojans best kept secrets, at first you may hate it but after a few plays the music really gets under your skin. I love it, and I have loved it for 30 odd years which isa long time not to et bored of an album. If you buy it I hope you like it too.
