This review is from: Mr Ghost Takes the Air (Audio CD)
Long before the war Belgian bandleader Fud Candrix signed a recording contract with German label Telefunken and he remained with them almost till the end of the war. The first two reissues in this series (of four to date) concentrate on the earlier period (1937-1940), while this third disc mainly deals with the 1940-1943 period (with two post war recordings of a small band with strings). Candrix, an aggressive tenorist, led a fine swing band, although his propensity for plugging up the brass with straight mutes is a bit unfortunate. Candrix himself is easily the strongest soloist, with pianist Yvon de Bie a runner-up. The trumpets are a bit on the weak side, technically as well as tonally, while the trombones do not solo at all. During the war Candrix made tours to Germany and France (where he accompanied Django Reinhardt). While his band may not have been of quite the same overall quality as that of Jean Omer (of whom sadly next to nothing has been reissued on CD) or Stan Brenders Modernes Tempo or even the Dutch band The Ramblers, in its best recordings it swung with an abandon few other European bands could match. This CD can be safely recommended as a worth while document of what swing sounded like under German occupation. Booklet info and audio restoration are lovingly done.
