5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and excellent movie!
If everyone thought Hong Kong was only good at making kung fu movies, well they're wrong! They can make an excellent comedy as well as a very exciting film! This film will keep you amused all the way to the very end. It's brilliantly directed by Jeff Lau who keeps the plot going without any flaws and excellent performances by Tony Leung, Faye Wong, Zhao Wie and Chang...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated but fun for those in the know
Jef Lau's Chinese Odyssey 2002 is strongly NOT recommended to those without more than a working knowledge of Chinese and Hong Kong cinema in general and Wong Kar Wei films in particular (Wong is the film's producer), not to mention several popular local TV commercials ("How can a meal prepared with love not taste good?"). Without being so forearmed, much of the film will...

This review is from: Chinese Odyssey 2002 [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
Jef Lau's Chinese Odyssey 2002 is strongly NOT recommended to those without more than a working knowledge of Chinese and Hong Kong cinema in general and Wong Kar Wei films in particular (Wong is the film's producer), not to mention several popular local TV commercials ("How can a meal prepared with love not taste good?"). Without being so forearmed, much of the film will be meaningless and unfunny. Even if you can pass the entrance exam, parts of it definitely fall flat, but there's enough straight-faced silliness here to compensate, be it Tony Leung and Faye Wong in a merciless parody of their Chungking Express meeting or the Emperor designate's unique way of letting his imagination run away with him. As for plot, it's a knowing send-up of the old one about two royal twins on the run falling in love with two ordinary twins, but that's just a skeleton, not just for the jokes but for the surprising moral of the tale - that true love is only possible if you are willing to lose your own identity.

There are no extras relating to the film on the DVD, which only boasts trailers for 2046, In the Mood For Love, My Architect and Supersize Me, but the transfer is very good quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Fluffy, 29 July 2007

This review is from: Chinese Odyssey 2002 [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
Chinese Odyssey is a bizarre mixture of martial arts movie, indie Hong Kong cinema, spoof and Shaekspeare. It follows 2 sets of siblings and their journeys of self dicovery and true love.
I thought it was a really cute film with a few laugh out loud moments and some good comic turns from stars Tony Leung and Chang Chen. However, like some other reviewrs have pointed out, it is helpful to have a working knowledge of other films (especially producer Wong Kar Wai's films) to get the full enjoyment out of this rather silly but entertaining movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure cinematic sunshine., 4 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Chinese Odyssey 2002 [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
Anu absolute must for anyone with a knowledge of Wong Kar Wai, and still enough here for anyone else to take a look. I was a bit skeptical at first at how well the humour would come through in translation, but I needn't have worried. The cast are uniformly excellent, particularly the brilliant Tony Leung Chiu Wai, showing that he can do broad comedy as well as all those serious roles like In The Mood For Love. The film is stunning to look at also. Definitely cheered me up no end!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!, 8 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Chinese Odyssey 2002 [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
Completely bonkers and absolutely charming. The four leads give great performances, the fights are slick and well choreographed, the sets and costumes are pretty and the plot is a nicely judged blend of sentiment and slapstick with a pleasingly outrageous final twist. Well worth investigation.
