4.0 out of 5 stars Pariah is good
I have Pariah on my xbox, and I think that it's a good game. Ok, calling it the next halo was a mistake,because parsonally, no fps game comes close to the halo games. But it certainly isn't a bad game. The Upgradable weapons are an ingenious and unique feature to this game, and the combat and playability is fantastic. 4.0 out of 5 stars I like it, 7 Dec 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Pariah (Xbox) (Video Game)
Okay, so this is not the greatest of games but there is something interesting and different about it.

The graphics are still pretty good, and the old Xbox I bought plays it without any slowdown. There is plenty of action, and excitement too.

The thing I really like about this game, however, is the story. It's a kind of weird sci-fi story, something akin to Dune. The story was good enough to keep me playing, and I can't say the same for many other video games at the moment.

If you have the time, and are looking for something with a good story - do check out this rather dated little gem.

3.0 out of 5 stars Passable 'Halo' wannabe, 2 Dec 2009
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Pariah (Xbox) (Video Game)
On first playing this game it seems that no expense has been speared on trying to make Pariah 'Halo 2'. And after a fair few hours of playing the game I've realized that is exactly what it is! This game copies 'Halo' so completely that it's cringeworthy. And unfortunately, although it looks like a lot of time and money has been spent of the development of Pariah, it is quite soulless and flawed.

The graphics are fairly good, but the Xbox seems to struggle a little. Credit to the developer(s), there are some very nice set-pieces and visual effects to be found. However, the graphics are the highlight of the game in my opinion, everything else is either slightly flawed or broken.

The story makes no sense what so ever, and as a result it means the game doesn't pull you in and you don't care about who you're shooting or saving... because you don't really know who your shooting or saving! You will find yourself in what looks like a massive 3-way battle/war at one point and you just kill everybody, and you don't even know who ANY of them are!!! Whoever wrote the story for this game (Hollywood scriptwriters apparently) did a very poor job. Bottom line; You're in outer-space, you are a man with a gun who keeps crashing his spacecraft, you are helping a woman who has a virus (or something) and you have caught it too, and you shoot random people.

Pariah's weapons are underwhelming, I only really liked the machine gun and grenade launcher. The rest of the weapons are a bit dull or just don't work very well. The rocket launcher in particular is dire, I've lost count of the number of times I've watched my rocket fly straight through the target and explode somewhere in the distance.

The vehicles are pretty pants too, but luckily there's not too much driving to do in the game. Just think of Halo's vehicles and the way they are controlled, then imagine the same vehicles and control system but not as good, that about sums it up.

Enemy AI is passable. It is sometimes quite taxing, other times very stupid. Nuff said.

One big flaw which lets Pariah down very badly is the outrageous number of glitches in the game, it's unreal! It's the one thing that lets the game down more than anything else. Your vehicles will get stuck on invisible barriers in mid-air, you will find yourself stuck in the scenery, whole groups of enemy's will just disappear, rockets shoot straight through gun turrets, there are invisible barriers EVERYWHERE, etc.
One thing that really annoyed me (although not actually a glitch) is the way you climb and descend ladders, it uses an outdated control method which only works for ladders that go straight up, descending can be irritating and there are ladders that go up AND down in Pariah! It's yet another oversight in a game which could have been amazing, but just feels rushed.

It's still worth a blast if you really love Halo, but Pariah never manages to be anything other than average.

Pros:
* Good graphics
* Some stunning set pieces
* Some fairly good shooting... in places

Cons:
* Loads of glitches
* AWFUL story
* Silly control oversights
* Boring vehicles

I brought this game after hearing a review on the Tele. They said that they only played a preview copy but some of the aspects of the game left them with a lot of hope for a challenger for Halo.
On first playing the game the control system felt smooth and easily identifiable. The graphics where tidy, no real visible faults until we introduced a second player into the game for co-op play. I have always been a fan of this and when we got going it was good fun blowing people into the air with the grenade launcher, but we did notice a severe slow down in game speed and graphics, a slight lagging effect was clear in the game as the game struggled to cope with the different movements of the games. This was the first of a few niggles that came up.
The second was the lack of story line. Random characters, conversations and general thoughts really ruined the game. It was enjoyable even with the lack of smooth graphics but when the cut scenes came up i really lost interest.
The last problem was the bosses, there were two obvious bosses that came up in the game, neither of which really caused any great deal of trouble and were far to close together.

This is a good game and i think that the next game that is made by the developers could be one of the finest that i will play, unfortunately this game really has no lastability and so will be completed in hours rather than days and will be sitting on your shelf soon after.
Renting this title would be my advice cause it certainly is worth playing as the weapon mods are very nice and fun to try out on your unsuspecting enemy. Play this game alone also and maybe switch between cut scenes rather than playing co-op. The lagging graphics are not the only niggle as the AI seems unaware there are two of you and so player two can often just walk up to enemies and blow them to pieces in comical fashion!!

This game had so much potential.

Thats where the fun ends however. Im not sure about P.C users but on the xbox myself and my friends who play xbox live found this game an utter disapointment.

Over all the single player game feels ok, a little rushed in places, most enememies react the same all the way through the games various (samey) environments.

Weapons feel highly underwhelming and although the ability to upgrade each weapon seems like a good idea, it only really makes the somewhat weak rocket launcher feel better.

Vehicles handle the same, whether they hover, have 3 or 4 wheels, or way 10 tonnes.

Map maker has limited options which is shame as this seemed like a great idea.

online play is fun for an hour with some friends, but gets boring very quick with the very limited match options.

Final verdict, steer very clear of this one, stick with Halo 2 and Unreal championship 2!

3.0 out of 5 stars Acceptable but overrated, 6 Jun 2007
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Pariah (Xbox) (Video Game)
Pariah suffers from a consistent flaw in the games industry hype machine, that is, any game with a relatively interesting concept and nice design becomes greatly hyped until the point that it is being sold as a game far beyond its merits. Pariah is a playable, acceptable first-person shooter with some interesting weapons and an ok plot. The graphics are passable but nothing amazing and the level design is ok but occasionally confusing. However, the game is not the next Halo and should not be treated as such. If you're the type to rent games, it's probably a better arrangement for you, if you buy it then wait until you see it discounted.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK......... I guess, 11 Feb 2006
This review is from: Pariah (Xbox) (Video Game)
Pariah is a decent game with good graphics and a long lifespan.
Although the weird thing is the guns are huge. Even the the machine gun is massive, and you always get the feeling that your character isnt strong enough to hold the gun. Overall this is a average but playable game.

If you are a hardened gamer, having come up through the ages of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, R.O.T.T. and on to gems such as Halo etc... Then you understand gameplay and the advances made in the industry with regards to A.I. texture mapping and lighting.

That said, Pariah was a HUGE dissapointment dispite some nifty graphics, but my fears were soon confirmed upon the game loading up. After seeing slightly more than 1 developer responsible for the game i became uneasy.

-The story is convoluted, with no real character development or background explored.

-The cut-scenes do little to explain anything properly

-Other annoying little glitches in gameplay, like side-step (too slow)

-Ludicrous movement restrictions

This game may be miles better on the P.C. but i'm not about to waste good money finding out.

If you just like running around shooting things, fine, you can pick it up pretty cheap now, go for it.

If you want an involving escape from reality with all the trappings of a good old FPS, then don't buy this one... You will cry.
