5.0 out of 5 stars The evilest of nines guaranteed to shoot crooked!, 19 Dec 2004
This review is from: You Can Be Special Too (Audio CD)
This is a great breaks/ hip hop/ rock album.
The album starts with my favourite track of 2004 'crooked' i first heard this tune on james lavelle barcelona mix. since then it has had vocals added by Aesop Rock and is even better. Next up is 'Devil Stuff' which is a solid breaks tune, followed by the funky hip hop of 'earth'. This album goes from strength with 'we have the energy' and 'snack bar lounge' two very different tunes the first being a heavy mix of breaks and vocals, the second more chilled.
'Pearl Shot' is a mix of breaks and hip-hop which is pure class. The album rounds off with 'Restless' another great mix of breaks and hip-hop, and 'Hired goons' which Adam Freeland remixed on his fabriclive.
This is a great album and it shows evil nine's ability to make a variety of tunes, but also they're best when making breaks/hip-hop tunes such as 'crooked' and 'restless'.
If you like this album then go see them live, they are mint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breaks with Rock and Hip Hop thrown in..., 31 Oct 2009

Evil Nine's first album features the smash Crooked (an anthem when it was released). The album is basically Breaks with a Rock influence and features several vocalists including the amazing rappers Aesop Rock and Juice Aleem. It may be a little too quirky for some - I still don't quite get the "special" theme - and there are probably two tracks that don't cut it but the rest of it is great! For those who like it underground but accessible. 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shifted my musical tastes, 9 Jan 2007

I heard this album for the first time in the car on the way to V-Festival 2005 and it's been a firm favourite since then. Pearl shot and crooked still get played very loudly, generally in the car on the way to a dirty night out in a club. Whether you're into dirty house, breaks, hip hop or late night sofa hugging music then this is one for the collection.
